Vintage-inspired barn art

June 10, 2015 by Kim Woodward

When it comes to the barn, we’re really embracing our rural-ness.

Rural-ness: it’s totally a thing.

Because when it comes to sprucing up the interior and exterior of the barn, we’re going rustic and ag-inspired. Think barn wood and rusted corrugated metal …

So when it came time to finish beautifying our patio, I embraced this feeling. And our barn door sign feels perfectly at home on a 100-year-old barn.

I knew that this large barn door needed something special. It’s such a huge canvas. I actually loved the raw barn wood, but I wanted it to blend more with everything around it.

There are several barns in our neck of the woods with HUGE barn signs on them – advertisements or logos for the farms. Most are very old (they just don’t make them like they used to) and perfectly worn. This is what inspired me to make my own barn sign on the door.

I started by painting the barn wood door in the same color red as the barn (it’s technically  Behr Solid Color Weatherproofing All-In-One Wood Stain and Sealer). Then, I painted the trim Behr Ultra Pure White.

Finally, I found a design online I loved and recreated it on the barn. You can do this by printing as an engineer print at Staples and tracing it onto the wood. (Check out some tips at My Sweet Savannah. I use chalk on the back and then trace everything with a pen to leave an indentation. Then, I simply paint the lines with the same white paint.)

I wasn’t aiming for perfection, but I really dig the finished product. (The design was something that I saw in various t-shirts when doing some searching on Pinterest. But none of the products are in stock. No matter – it gave me a start for the design.)

I love that the sign creates a piece of artwork for the patio space.  This has truly become a favorite space for Ryan and I to relax in the evenings. I can’t wait to share the whole area with you.

What do you think of our barn sign?
