A pretty and practical changing table

October 31, 2017 by Kim Woodward

When it comes to designing a nursery, I think it can be both pretty AND practical.

And nowhere needs more practicality than the changing table. In our home, the changing table is an extra hardworking space – all day and night. It’s truly a storage piece that packs a punch. (See Lucille’s whole nursery.)

And while our changing table functions well, it also looks great.

For a little added touch above the dresser, we recently added a custom sign from my talented friend Jen at Onion Grove Mercantile.

I think the sign – and that sweet baby – are both perfection. (Not surprised at all. I love everything Jen creates. Check out some of the other pieces from Jen in our home – Henry’s infamous “Locally Grown” sign and the Christmas countdown sign.)

I asked Jen to create something that fit perfectly in this space above the dresser. The wall is short here – so she created a long and narrow sign for the area. I love how it fills the space just so.

I wanted a quote that had something to do with flowers – since the nursery has many modern floral elements. I loved this quote from the moment I set eyes on it –

“With grace in your heart and flowers in your hair.”

There’s something special about a girl (or woman) who gives heaping loads of grace – to others and herself. It’s something I hope my daughter develops. Because I’m much more concerned about her beauty on the inside than her beauty on the outside.

And as for the flowers – well, I just hope she doesn’t take herself too seriously. That she is playful and whimsical and full of life. That she appreciates and shows gratitude for the beauty in nature around here.

Is that a lot to take away from one short quote? (Blame the hormones.)

Jen has such a gift for painting incredible florals – and she was able to pull the same colors in this piece that were already elsewhere in the room. The piece has a vintage flair – and really suits the area above the distressed dresser.

We purchased a wider dresser for this nursery than what we had in Henry’s nursery for a changing table. That gave us just enough extra counter space to add a small basket with the necessities – dipes and wipes. Because while we could store them away in the drawer, it’s just not practical. It’s much more convenient to have them right where we need them without digging around in the drawer.

We also tucked a little sound machine behind the basket – which is a necessity in both Henry and Lucille’s rooms. (We swear by this one.)

I think this space is the perfect mix of beauty and practicality. Even Miss Lucy seems to enjoy it. (You know mom is also a huge fan!)

So pretty! I love the phrase. Also, that is the exact same sound machine weve purchased and it is the best! Great for thin walls and kids that share rooms! We have two of them for each bedroom.
