DIY maple leaf barn quilt | Fall mantel inspiration

September 26, 2017 by Kim Woodward

Who says that barn quilts have to be hung on a barn?

Not me.

I vote for indoor barn quilts all day long! Because then you get to enjoy it – even if you are barn-less. I’m loving my new DIY fall-inspired barn quilt and this year’s mantel decor. It’s extra cozy and full of seasonal color.

It’s the perfect addition to our fall home this year.

The old window frame is from our first home – and it’s probably my favorite piece to reinvent throughout the year. My father-in-law cut me a scrap piece of plywood that fits right inside the window. I simply painted it white and added the maple leaf barn squares per my own specifications.

(I used this maple leaf barn quilt for inspiration and this barn quilt template.)

It’s not perfect, but it is exactly what I was dreaming up for the mantel this year.

And Henry approves. If you don’t have a 5-year-old to watch you complete your projects at your kitchen island, you need to get you one. The entire time I painted, he admired and encouraged me: “Momma, you are SO GOOD AT THIS. How did you get so good at this? Did you practice a lot?”

Bless his heart. That boy can build me up like no one else. (He also reminded me that I always had a big belly – even before the baby. So it’s give and take.)

There was no scientific method to pull the rest of the mantel together. I just added some pumpkins and fall items that I already had.

You can never have enough pumpkins, in my opinion. And I’ll be able to keep these through Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Pumpkins just a good investment. (Ryan disagrees on my definition of “investment.”)

There is no chance of a real fire yet – Mother Nature has been blessing us with 90 degree days. But, that means swimming in September. Which will certainly be something we envy come January.

Until the colder weather hits, I’ll just enjoy the coziness of our fall home.

Kid’s give the best compliments! And I am pretty sure the belly comment is Henry’s way of saying, “You’re still just as beautiful as you’ve always been, Mama.” Kid’s are great like that!
