The bedroom-slash-living room in the barn apartment

October 7, 2014 by Kim Woodward

Because I was hosting 12 of my friends to the barn, I had to make the barn look somewhat presentable. Which included the bed.

This is what Ryan calls, “doing things in the wrong order.”

Like putting up a shower curtain before the shower is finished. Or putting up a barn wood cow on the wall before Ryan’s finished installing the outlet covers. Or planting flowers before we live on the property to water them.

Basically, EVERYTHING I DO IS OUT OF ORDER. I just want the excitement of the awesome part – the pretty and fun part.

Anyhow, back to the bed. I drug the mattress and all the bedding out to the barn for craft night. Because even though it’s still a bit of a construction zone, making a bed could make everything better. I just used Henry’s navy quilt from his room, along with a few of his pillows.

I had some questions about this bed in the last post. It’s the HEMNES daybed from IKEA. Our plan is to stack 2 twin mattresses on top of this bed. During the day, they’ll be stacked. At night, we’ll pull the base out and slide the mattress over to use as a bed. I’ll do a whole separate post about this when we have actually used it. for now, know that our plan is for the mattresses to be stacked on top of each other.

The view from the bedroom-slash-living-room into the kitchen. Oh, and look, there’s the bathroom and Henry’s room. It’s so handy to see everything from one spot. No privacy here, folks.

I am pretty sure it’s going to be quick to clean this place. I wonder if that means I will actually clean. Doubt it.

This wall is going to be a lifesaver. We’re planning to use the drawers for “dressers” for some of our clothing. And the television and electronics will also live there. A hard-working space.Built in cabinets barn apartment NewlyWoodwarfds2

And that’s where we’re at in the barn apartment.

It’s really looking like a home now, don’t you think? And surprisingly, the furniture actually makes it feel bigger. There’s plenty of room to walk around and for Henry to run. It’s pretty rad.

What do you think?

Quick cleaning indeed! I think the cleanest I ever kept any place we lived was when we rented an itty-bitty basement apartment right after we moved out to Utah. There was one large-ish (relatively speaking) kitchen/dining/living room that was impossible to hide if it was messy, so it was always rather tidy (more or less). In a way, it’s kind of nice to have no hiding rooms/places to stow stuff, since it forces you to be neat.

Yeah, I think I’ll eventually get there. I’m excited about the downsizing, but I’m also freaking out. Because I hate having clutter out and about so I just want a place for everything. Eeeeek.

I do the wrong order too but it’s what keeps me going to get a project done.

That’s a good point – need to keep motivated.

It looks fabulous. And surprisingly spacious! So easy to keep clean, that’s a plus. We started watching “Tiny House Nation” this week and we love the concept of a smaller home. You’re on the cutting edge, girl! Enjoy!

It looks WONDERFUL in there! I assume there will be a TV in the blank spot that’s trimmed out?

      Yep – that’s the plan. =)

Looks great! We have one of the Ikea day beds in the guest room and it is great. Super comfy to sleep on.

    It’s perfect!
I am the queen of doing things backwards too….like filling our kitchen cabinets with stuff before we have all the shelves and aren’t even close to being done. You gotta do what you gotta do! lol

i always liked doing the fun parts before it was really time too. that’s probably why we still have some trim to paint and landscaping to be done…oopsies.

I can totally relate to your husband saying you’re doing things out of order! My husband calls it the “critical path.” We’re currently building a house and he says my current dresser to vanity conversion is not on the critical path since the bathroom has not been seamfilled, painted or tiled yet. Silly husbands – always putting the practical ahead of the pretty! Barn is looking amazing 🙂

Love calling it the “critical path.” Totally going to use that.

And I agree on silly husbands. You should totally be focusing on the vanity conversion. Heck, I’d already be thinking about soap dishes. 😉

I am out of order too. Wait that came out wrong. 😀 I have our two mattresses stacked on top of each other on ours too. Works just fine!

Love all your progress Kim. It’s getting so close to moving in now, I can feel it 🙂

I love it! I’ve heard the hemnes can work better as a day bed if you stack one mattress on its side behind it.

The end panels of the daybed would look awesome covered in metal sheeting so Henry can play with magnetic letters on them!

Interesting idea on the mattresses – I’ll try it and report back.

And I LOVE the idea of the metal sheeting.

Love seeing progress on the barn. I was wondering, do you have any contact with the original owners of the barn and/or have they seen any of your progress? I bet their mind would be blown to see how their old barn has been rebuilt into something beautiful and useful and given a new life. 🙂

It looks so cozy! I love what you are doing with this space. Though I have to admit, I’ll be sad when you’re no longer in your house with Henry’s room. I’ve actually shown it to my husband as inspiration for our future son’s room. No, I’m not even pregnant. So how’s that for doing things out of order?!

i do things in the same order as you! who needs practical- bring on the pretty! i love the pop of color you’ve added in the bedding!

Quick cleaning is a definite perk! And anything that gets in your way, you can just toss downstairs in the barn and forget about. It’s like having a GIANT junk drawer right underneath you! (probably you don’t really want to use your barn as a giant junk drawer. but you COULD ;))

    • Kim Woodward says

      October 7, 2014 at 7:06 AM

Ugh. WE CANNOT USE THE BARN AS A JUNK DRAWER. That’s always been how our garage has been and it makes me crazy. We’re trying to keep things clean down there. So don’t tempt me. 😉

Can I second the idea of using the barn as a junk drawer?? I mean, I know it’s not really a good idea, but I just like the sound of it 🙂
