A full kitchen tour

March 19, 2013 by Kim Woodward

It’s the first-ever KITCHEN WEEK at NewlyWoodwards. Are you excited?

Why have a kitchen week, you ask? Because people love to ask me questions about our kitchen and I want to answer all those questions for you.

I aim to please, friends!

So, in the next few days, I’ll be covering IKEA cabinetry and butcher block countertops. Next week, I’ll get to open cabinetry and creating a landing zone when you don’t have a fancy mudroom.

But before we get to all that, let’s just take a little tour shall we? When we were planning the kitchen, I wanted it to be light and bright. White cabinets, aqua walls and lots of bright Fiestaware colors. I also wanted to try some open shelves.

Kitchen red and aqua

Who wants to see the before? This is like something from a horror show. We pretty much ripped everything out before renovating. (You can follow along on our year-long renovation in our weekly progress reports.)

And now. The beauty of knowing this isn’t our forever house is that we can try things to see how we like them. Like IKEA cabinets, butcher block countertops, a single-basin sink, open shelves … it was a good opportunity to try some new things. Some things, I love. Some things, I don’t so much love. (More on that later. Back to the tour.)
Kitchen red and aqua

Another before – here’s the other end of the kitchen towards the back door.

And now …
Kitchen red and aqua

And the other side of the kitchen – with our fridge, pantry and basement doors. And our big DIY chalkboard.

Kitchen red and aqua

And one last shot of all my pretty Fiestaware …

Kitchen red and aqua

This kitchen is relatively hard to photograph, because it’s long and narrow. But it’s a great room and I love it. The windows make it feel much bigger than it is. I love the white cabinetry and dark hardware and appliances. Plus, it has tons more storage than our last kitchen remodel.

Come back tomorrow for more than you ever wanted to know about IKEA cabinetry. And check out our entire house tour here.

What do you think?

Hi! I am redoing my kitchen with the same IKEA cabinets. I was wondering.… what color did you paint your trim? Does it match the cabinets or did you just use the same color as through out the house.
Also, what color did you use on the kitchen walls?
    Thank you!

I had the cabinet color color-matched for the trim in this room. The other rooms in the house were a brighter white but I wanted it to match.

The walls are Silver Sage by Restoration Hardware, color matched in Behr paint. =)

I’m not 100 percent sure – I bought it locally and it’s about 4 years old.

I believe in IKEA kitchens.. we did one in our last house and swear by them too. Hopefully in the next year ( maybe two) I will be doing my own blog post about doing another one. We like the ones that look like white washed wood. Anyway, we have pretty much decided on both an apron sink ( though I am so worried over scratches and stains) and then we want butcher block.. I am curious what did you treat yours with.. they are so beautiful and shiny!

I love your bright and happy kitchen! All of your Fiestaware really pops against the white. Can’t wait to read your thoughts on your sink. I’m trying to talk Brad into a single-basin sink.

Wow! I love everything about this kitchen. It’s so bright and cheery. I adore white cabinets, butcher block counters, and subway backsplash. And so smart hanging the towel hook on the upper cabinet next to the sink. I have 2 small kids who constantly pull the tea towels off the store door, so I’ll have to try this.

I absolutely ADORE your kitchen! Love all of your choices – and especially your bright fiesta ware. So nice to see so much colour in your “white” kitchen! It feels classic and cottagey yet clean and modern all at once with a fun eclectic vibe. Can’t wait to hear about what you like and don’t like about it, since we are planning a little kitchen remodel ourselves! Thanks for sharing this:)

So pretty. I am looking forward to the Ikea cabinet post. I had them in my condo where I lived for about 4 years and I really liked them. We desperately need new cabinets in our kitchen and I keep thinking about Ikea for them.

I love the fiestaware! I always see it when I’m shopping and want to load up on blue. I think getting only blue is pretty much the opposite of the intent of having bold fiestaware colorS, plural!

I’m really curious to hear about the Ikea cabinets and the butcher block counters. We’re designing an addition right now and it will have a breakfast bar area with a cabinet below and a counter top (obviously.) I don’t love the cabinets or granite we have in our kitchen so I was thinking of doing a contrast cabinet and an entirely different counter top. I think a different granite or stone would look weird so butcher block is up for discussion. Or maybe stainless or concrete.

It was purchased on Wayfair (used to be CSN), I think. I posted about them here. https://newlywoodwards.com/2011/10/so-far-house-kitchen.html

I loved them at first but they did NOT hold up well to high traffic and always looked terrible. They also started coming apart. All in all, not worth the money.
