Our exterior holiday decor

December 18, 2013 by Kim Woodward

I shared our full holiday home tour a few weeks ago. But, due to weather, I didn’t get to finish up our outdoor decor until this week. Because clearly, it’s better to wait until IT SNOWS to finish your outside decorations.

We don’t go over the top, but I think our home looks quite festive! (The layer of snow doesn’t hurt that feeling. It does, however, hurt my back. I’m already over all this shoveling.)

But I’m not over the porch. A red front door is pretty all year, but there’s something perfect about a red door at Christmastime.

You already saw our non-wreath. I originally made this non-chalkboard arrangement for Henry’s birthday party. (Check out this tutorial at Perfectly Imperfect for more about making inexpensive faux chalkboards with poster board.) I simply added our wedding DIY pinecone wreath and a quick Christmas tree chalk drawing.

The weathered fence was a gift from my mom a few years ago. The berry wreaths were hand-me-downs from my in-laws and the poinsettia arrangements were alter arrangements at our wedding. I love that we can use them each holiday.

On the other side of the door,  we have the second poinsettia arrangement, a red wagon borrowed from my in-laws and another holiday chalkboard.

I also added greenery to the railing. And let’s not forget our pew bows!!! It’s wedding central on our porch!

The vintage sled is also a favorite. (And another hand-me-down from my in-laws.) Can I call it vintage? I don’t actually know how old it is. But it looks vintage so I’m going with it.

For our fence planters, I simply cut and added some real greenery to the cans. (I grabbed the pine branches from Home Depot. Did you know they give the trimmings away for free?)

And that’s our exterior tour.

Love your festive porch! I’m definitely wishing we had snow here, instead it’s 60 degrees outside right now!

It’s wonderful! Merry Christmas!! I just remembered we have a red lantern on our deck. I’m going to get it and fill it with colored ornament balls. Thanks so much for sharing so much 🙂

Looks pretty, especially with all of that snow. I usually make wreaths for the outside each year, but this year I didn’t even hang a fake one. So far no one had knocked on my door to complain so I guess I’m ok until next Christmas!

Your house is adorable! And you’re completely right about having a red door at Christmas (though I’m biased because we, too, have a red front door).

Red doors are supposed to mean a welcome, so I think it’s perfect for any home. Glad you like it!

Very festive! I love all the red, and I love your door….like the fact that it’s red, but also those long skinny windows in it and the house number and everything 🙂

The door is totally my favorite! It’s original to the house and we had the glass re-done when we moved in since it was broken. Just love it. Hard to find a door this sturdy and with such character today.

I’ve told you before, but I’m obsessed with your front porch!!! It’s so decorate-able. Your decorations look terrific. And your red door DOES look extra magical 🙂

Thank you so much! I don’t really enjoy decorating outside as much as inside (cold weather and I don’t mix). But I do love the outcome!

Your front porch is so cute! Love that wagon and all your chalkboards. 🙂

Thanks, Anu! It’s a bit of a chalkboard overload but I love that I can use them throughout the year and then Christmas-fy them.

LOVE it- and you can send your snow down here if you’d like. It’s supposed to be 70 (!!) this weekend here and I’m OVER that. I hate it when it’s warm in the winter- it just feels wrong. Bring on the cold and snow!!

    • Kim@NewlyWoodwards says

      December 18, 2013 at 2:23 PM

Really? Because 70 and sunny sounds pretty dang awesome.

We all want what we can’t have. 😉

I have said it before and I will say it again…I love your house. It is so colorful and welcoming and it makes me want to come in and kick off my shoes and hang out…which I hope you don’t take in a creepy way, lol. I love that your house isn’t all white and greige and that you embrace color.

    • Kim@NewlyWoodwards says

      December 18, 2013 at 2:22 PM

Not creepy at all. Wish you were closer – I’d love to have you over. Hot cocoa?

      • Gia says

        December 20, 2013 at 9:33 AM

        Hot cocoa it is!

Seriously though…I am living with my parents post-divorce with my three-year old son and your house makes me miss the one we sold so much!

There’s nothing quite like a porch decked out in evergreen garland to say Christmas. Your front porch looks wonderful – I agree, a red door is always nice, and makes you look extra cheery at Christmas!

SO SO SO PRETTY!!! I love your Christmas decorations. You win the prize for best decorations ever in my book. 🙂

      December 18, 2013 at 2:22 PM

Awwww….. thanks, Sarah. Do I get some sort of a trophy for that? 😉

Your house looks so lovely and festive!!

While I was growing up in Chicago, I was the snow shoveler in the family. What a horrible task! That is part of the reason we moved!

    • Kim@NewlyWoodwards says

      December 18, 2013 at 2:21 PM

Shoveling is the worst! At least this snow is really light. Makes it easy to shovel.

This is so pretty Kim. I have to tell you I am a little envious of your snow. It looks just so charming and cozy with all your Christmas decor.

You can have it. 😉 Just kidding. It does make it feel more like Christmas.

      December 18, 2013 at 2:20 PM

Eeek! That’s so exciting. I was just telling Ryan and I’ll probably want to do more outside since our space will be so small.

So pretty! I always adore the red and green with fresh snow. There is nothing more festive for Christmas than that 😉

    • Kim@NewlyWoodwards says

Thanks, Julia! I agree. The snow made everything look more festive. (And it was better than seeing the leaves that we never finished raking.)
