Silver DIY pinecone wreaths with JOY

December 10, 2013 by Kim Woodward

I make small and large changes to our holiday decorating each year.

(You can check out all our holiday decor here – 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009 and 2008)

The reason for some of this is boredom. (“I’m tired of hanging the stockings on the mantel.”) Some is practicality. (“Putting glass ornaments in Henry’s would be the ornaments’ death wish.”) And some is just experimentation. (“I ought to move the whole dang Christmas tree this year.”)

You may have already spotted the change in our living room. After putting the (new) tree in a different corner of the living room, there was a blank wall that was bugging me. So, I made a little JOY display with three DIY pinecone wreaths.

I love how it turned out! And the white and red lights on the tree really shine in this corner.Living Room Red and Green Christmas Decor07

I have a whole bin of these awesome DIY pinecone wreaths. I crafted them for our wedding in 2007 and they are still going strong. (BTW: I made these pre-Pinterest. Which clearly means I AM A GENIUS. I mean, how in the world did I do anything creative before someone else did it for me and wrote out a tutorial?)JOY art silver pinecone wreaths2

The wreaths have held up so well, I figured it was worth sharing them now. I don’t have a step by step tutorial because I’m not prepared or professional. But, I simply hot glued pinecones to  a flat wreath form (mine were wood from a craft store, but you could also just use cardboard and cut to size). I just arranged them to cover the form as well as possible. Then, I hit the entire wreath with a can of silver spray paint, which covered any spaces. For the added red, I hot glued the red berries from the Dollar Tree. So stinkin’ simple that I made a dozen of them. And so sturdy that you’ll have them for years to come.

I’ve used them in a variety of ways over the years, but this may be my favorite. I attached them to the wall with 3M strips and cut the word JOY on my Silhouette. Easy peasy way to make a statement wall.

I love these, and doing them on cardboard would probably lessen the weight quite a bit too!

I always love your Christmas decor. And I always remember that your anniversary is right around now, and then I love it more. There has to be something so romantic about getting out Christmas decorations and remembering your wedding every year. I think you were onto something with that December wedding!

We moved our tree this year too in hopes of preventing the tiny tornado from scaling it. So far so good 😉 I love those wreathes! They look great!
