Update: An adjustable crib skirt from a flat sheet

January 22, 2013 by Kim Woodward

Right before Henry was born, I made a crib skirt from a flat sheet.

This project was all about quick, easy and cheap. And it turned out pretty darn good. It’s also become a pretty popular post on the old blogerooski. Likely because it’s quick, easy and cheap.

And because I’m awesome, of course. Mostly that.

Now, Henry is nearly 8 months old and it was time to drop the crib. Because the boy is full-on mobile and also turning into McGyver. I knew it was only a matter of time before he scaled that crib and ended up in Argentina solving some sort of crime with a toothpick and a piece of scotch tape.

So, I thought I’d share how the skirt is holding up after 8 months use and how it worked to drop the crib. Here is what it the setup looked like in May. If you remember, the beauty of this type of crib skirt is that it’s adjustable. It works at all crib heights. It is also made of three uber-simple-to-put-together panels. (Learn more in the original post.)

And here’s the skirt after dropping the mattress frame by one “peg.” The ribbons on the short sides aren’t perfect because the one that overlaps with the front panel doesn’t have anywhere to attach. But this makes absolutely no difference and the skirt still lies beautifully.

(You can ignore the dust and the random staple on the floor. I clearly do.)

It took less than five minutes to adjust the skirt this time around. Less time than the first time because I knew what I was doing and I didn’t have a beach ball in my belly.
All in all, I’m thrilled with how the crib skirt has held up. See how nicely the skirt lays, even after moving it? I’ve been really pleased with how well this skirt has held up. It looks much more expensive than it was.
And this ham? Loves being able to stand in the crib. And now I’m thinking we should have dropped it another peg.
During this picture, I was singing “Hey, Henry, you’re so fine, you’re so fine you blow my mind. Hey, Henry. Hey, hey, hey Henry.  WOO!”
Every picture I took, Henry was just staring at the camera. He’s so used to taking photos that he’s not sure why I was taking photos of the crib skirt instead of him.

And because I know you will ask – the sign is from my amazingly talented friend Jen at Onion Grove Mercantile. I think you should order one of your own because it’s the best sign ever.

Our boys have one thing in common – their cribs are their party zones!! We haven’t dropped the crib yet, but we have added bumpers. I know that’s a big SIDS no-no, but William was managing to grab the rails, roll himself over and then scream bloody murder until we came to flip him back. For whatever reason, the bumpers keep him from rolling. 🙂

It’s so hard to focus on the crib skirt when you’ve got such a cute baby standing in the bed 🙂

I’ll have to make a mental note of this for future reference. Good work, Woodward.

Henry is such a ham. I’m telling you– baby model.

He looks like he enjoys his nest. I’d drop it for sure. It looks too easy for McGyver to flip right over to make his getaway to South America.

Very cute idea! I love the crib sheet too. Did you make that? Can’t wait to see the updates. Henry is such a cutie! Those eyes!

you can never tell Kim – but oh my, Henry’s cuteness just made me loose focus on the crib skirt!!! he is super adorable, and a natural model too!

He is so cute – looks like his mama! Yep, I agree, lower it one more peg…

Henry is so freaking adorable!!! I love the navy crib bedding. Boy crib bedding is almost always the same light blue color. Navy adds so much more polish and contrast against the white crib. I’ve been introducing pops of navy around Baby Max’s room too. I should probably do an update also…

MAN that kid is handsome! Nicely done! The crib skirt is awesome as well, of course. I never put a skirt on my goober’s crib because I hadn’t seen a manly looking one at the time–they were all so frilly and ruffly and that just didn’t seem to work for a little boy. But yours is so nice and boyish! I’m tempted to make one for his crib now, but at 2 1/2, I’m not sure how much longer the crib will be in the picture for him.

We did the same thing – lowered the crib one notch, then katie started standing in the crib more often so we dropped it again. Such a pain to put her in there at night with it so low, but at least we don’t worry about her falling out!

HOLY MOLY Henry is friggin adorable! Seriously. I might plan a road trip just to meet him. Uh, I mean you? XO. But honestly the first photo should be entered into some sort of “isn’t my baby cute’ contest. And now I’m done gushing.

So I’ve put off the crib skirt this long but today. Today I will turn that pretty sheet I bought 6 months ago (after your first post) and start on it! Thanks for the virtual slap. And the cute little H photos.

PS: I feel like there needs to be some sort of small arrow like sign hanging above the crib that say’s ‘caged animal’ (obviously I crack myself up). Maybe I’ll make you one. After the crib skirt.
