Simple DIY fabric pennants

August 29, 2012 by Kim Woodward

(This is one of a few more detailed posts to come about projects I completed in Henry’s nursery. I know. It never ENDS.)

I had tons of fabric collected for Henry’s nursery. I just kept buying fabric I liked, as I mentioned in the pillow post. Since I ended up not needing oodles of pillows, I tried something else with the excess of fabric.

PENNANTS!

I see pennants used for decor, parties and sewing, and I was jonesing for some in Henry’s room. They are fun and playful, while also being super simple. I was able to make all these in an hour or so.

I started with the tutorial by A home-based mom. However, I made a few changes for my use. I made them smaller – about 6 inches wide and long. I also chose not to make the pennants two-sided (in the tutorial, she sews two pennants back-to-back to allow it to be reversible. Since they were going on the wall, I deemed this unnecessary.

To put them together, I used navy blue pre-made binding from Hancock. I draped them at the top of the wall with a staplegun. The holes are so small they aren’t even noticeable if I do take them down.

I ended up making WAY too many of the pennants, so I’m thinking I may be making more strands to hang on my fence next summer for the patriotic holidays. Or maybe I need a big pennant quilt with all the extras?

So many pennant options, so little time. For now, I’m just enjoying the burst of pattern they add to Henry’s nursery.

What do you think?

I love the pennants. They add that little extra touch to the nursery. 🙂

Cute room, but how come you decided to change the daybed style to a twin bed setup. Doesn’t it give you less room to move around in?

I love the look of pennants. I am in the process of making a crib skirt with pennants…and by in the process I mean I have the fabric, lol. I figured if I had any fabric left I would make some for the walls. Henry’s turned out really cute!!

I love the pennants. I just don’t have your knack for hanging them – maybe I should try the staple gun. And I love that these are multi-purpose if you need a little Ameriana decor in the future.

Oh, I love!!! I think saving the extras for the 4th is a great idea. They’d look awesome on a fence or bunting. 🙂

I think you should make a pennant quilt- I tried to make one but mine did not turn out near as cute as yours. I love the nursery and the pennants are the perfect accent!
