Make a personalized rustic wheelbarrow

September 12, 2016 by Kim Woodward

In the Midwest, it finally feels like fall. I actually wore a jacket this weekend. I feel like that deserves a moment of silence.

So, I’m in official fall mode. If it’s still 1000 degrees where you live, I have two options for you:

  1. Fly to visit us in Illinois. (Bring a jacket.)
  2. Grab a Pumpkin Spice latte and drink it inside your car with the A/C blasting. Then make a rustic wheelbarrow and fill it with pumpkins.

Both are viable options.

Over the weekend, I worked on tweaking more of our fall decorations – including finishing own version of the rustic wheelbarrow from Home Depot DIH Workshops. (Register for free right now to learn to make your own.)

It’s the cutest little thing – and it is so simple to make using a pre-made crate from Home Depot. So you can have it together in less than an hour.

I stained mine using a mix of Walnut and Gray stains from Miniwax. And then, I added a little personalization with a stencil and paint.

It’s the perfect spot for blankets on the porch.

And, as if that wasn’t enough – it works great as a planter in the garden. I tried it both places and love it both ways.

I may just have to make a second wheelbarrow this week to have one in both places. rustic-wheelbarrow-newlywoodwards-outdoor1

Which do you prefer? The garden wheelbarrow or the blanket porch wheelbarrow?

Hi Kim… what a great fall project. Wish it was cooler here in Florida, we’re happy when it goes below 90 (ha, ha). I love the simple design but portraying a very rustic farm feel. I think I’ll build one for my wife for the front porch for Halloween. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Ed – sending you cool weather thoughts. This is such a fun and flexible project (not to mention easy). Hope your wife loves it!

I miss jackets. I think I’m going to vote for blanket wagon simply because I know that I’m actually up for the task of putting blankets in a wagon, whereas I’m pretty sure planting things in a wagon is beyond the scope of what I could manage these days…

Ha! And those plants are already barely hanging on by a thread.

This is so cute! I love your stain color choices and the stenciled words just make it!

I love the wheelbarrow, but can we talk about all the nostalgia feels seeing that little afghan blanket stirred up inside of me? I remember having a few around the house growing up that I think my grandmother had made. I have no idea if my parents still have them – and now I want to find one for myself! Ours were the loudest colors you could find that did not match any decor, and we loved them just the same.

Still hot as balls here in NJ. Send some cool air our way!

Hope you are finally getting some cooler temps. This hot stuff is for the birds.

(And I totally feel you on the afghan. I found this at a sale and had to have it.)

love both uses. I only wish we would need some blankets right about now in Georgia. Happy almost fall!

Hope you get some cooler temps soon. Mother Nature needs to understand that September means blankets and cool temps.

I love it both ways. I have a ranch style house so no porch per se so in the garden it would go at my house. You definitely need two – one for each place.

I forgot to mention that I love, love, love the pillow with the radio flyer as well.

Thanks, Colleen! The pillow is from Society 6 – Crafterberry Bush. I have a holiday one, too.

So very pretty! I love the idea of using it to hold the throw blankets. The sign and the stain color are beautiful.

Thanks, Cristina! I feel like having a place for pillows and blankets is a great way to keep the clutter under control> I’m a bit of a blanket hoarder.

And yes, it felt like fall this weekend in the midwest! We went to the Nebraska football game on Saturday, and it was chilly in the morning when we were tailgating. I loved it! 🙂

Love the cool mornings! (Now, if I could just skip the inevitable frozen tundra winters, that’d be great.)
