It’s September, meet my pumpkins

September 13, 2010 by Kim Woodward

I had picked 9 pumpkins by the end of August, but I convinced myself to wait until September to put them out (thanks to the advice of my Facebook friends).

Once Labor Day hit, I put out the pumpkins and planted a few $1.50 mums in the pots where my poor petunias had kick the bucket.

Last year, we threw the old pumpkins from the window boxes at my mother-in-law and father-in-law’s house. It grew a tons of little pumpkins, perfect for the window boxes. I traded them 2 big pumpkins for a sack full of these little guys. I think that’s a great deal. =)

Since it’s been really lovely and cool in our neck of the woods, I also felt festive enough to pull out our other fall decor. I have about 5 tubs of autumn decorations, and I’ve decided to buy nothing new this year besides the mums. (This sounds intuitive, but I have a weakness for seasonal items. I usually end up picking up something or other at Kohl’s or Michael’s. In fairness, I’m spending very little time shopping outside of the hardware store, so it’s not difficult to avoid.)

I clearly err on the side of less is more. Ha!

As an aside – a great big thanks goes out to CSN Stores for the opportunity to pick something from their online stores. I was able to pick up 12 new white Fiestaware dinner plates (bottom right), which I have been coveting for a while. I like them for a little more continuity on the table. I am going to consider these my china, since I don’t have china. =) I’m so pleased with all our Fiestaware dishes. I think these new white ones will get plenty of use.

I spent little time (about an hour) and little money (only the $10 on mums)  decorating this year, but I’m really pleased with all the pumpkins, leaves and fall colors. I’ve even been burning seasonal candles (although I really love these scents all year).

I guess I just enjoy bringing out new decorations with the seasons, because it gives me an excuse to change things up. Plus, with the amount of time we’re spending at the other house, it’s nice to come home to all the festivity.

I think I like this year’s decorations best.

Have you decorated for fall? Or do you decorate at all?

I can’t believe you got all that done in an hour! It looks great. I really love the little pumpkins in the window boxes. I might have to copy that, sadly I’ll have to buy mine. It is still too warm to think about fall decor here. My impatients are still growing too.

    Your pumpkins are so cute.

Now I really feel like I’m behind with my fall decor. I’ve only managed to place three lonely pumpkins on my front steps.

I’ve been resisting the urge to dig out all my fall assessories since I’m not quite ready to give up my summer stuff. You’ve got me thinking…hmmmm… I might be able to hold out another week or two!

Love it! I wish I could decorate everything right now, but with selling our townhouse we really have to keep things minimal. I might change out the fake flowers on the kitchen table with some fall fake flowers.

Hmmm, I might have to rethink this. If I can make it look nice I think I could decorate. Could change out the pink candles to fall candles, add the banner that you did for me and maybe add a fallish tablecloth.

    Thanks for inspiring me.

Have I ever told you that I just want to smell your house? Really. It looks like it smells so nice in there. And probably, this time of year, like spice or some other autumn-y scent. 🙂

Your petunias kicked the bucket? Mine are still running rampant! They absolutely took over one of my flower beds this year. I have some on my back deck in a hanging basket, too – I thought they were completely dead, but then my mom visited, and she was all, “You DO know you can cut these completely back and they’ll regrow, right?” So she did, and what do you know? They’re growing just like they did at the beginning of summer!

Thanks, gals. The tablecloth is from Crate and Barrel, I picked it up on clearance last December.

Jen – Your Lions totally got robbed. But, dear Lord, it’s pretty depressing that it came to that! The Bears are terrible this year.
