Inspired: Moody downstairs bathroom

February 17, 2016 by Kim Woodward

I believe it should be in the Constitution that a bathroom on every floor in a two-story house is a matter of liberty. This is really about freedom.

I’m serious. It’s my platform when I run for President. I will win by a landslide.

In our last house, we only had one bathroom and it was upstairs. And at the risk of sounding like the laziest person on the face of the earth, I cursed that bathroom.

Not only on normal days when I was feeling lazy. But when I came home from having surgery and really couldn’t go up the stairs. Or when my toddler was beginning to show signs of potty training readiness. (You try lugging a 35-pound sack of potatoes up 15 stairs.)

Anyhow, in our new house, we’ll have a full downstairs bathroom with a tub/shower. It’s nothing fancy but this baby is going to change my life for the better. Not only does it allow me to use the restroom without going up the stairs, it’s also right off the mudroom. This means that we can clean up when we come inside and can even bathe the dogs without destroying our own bathroom.

We have hit the big time.

The plan for this bathroom is all about moodiness – dark walls with a little pop of kelly green. It’s not a huge room – and I think making the room darker will actually work in the space. Here’s my simple plan:

How do you feel about downstairs bathrooms? Moody walls? The Constitution?

I am pro all three of those things, and pro kelly green!

What ever color you chose, turn it into chalkboard paint and have a blast leaving messages and other graffiti. Love all your choices.

You made the right call with a downstairs bathroom. Think of all your loved ones as they age and their mobility. We’ve had to move family function because we can’t have Grandma for Christmas day if she can make it up the stairs to go to the restroom at Aunt so and so. In fact I have a different Aunt right now building a new 1 story house just so Grandma can come stay with them for a few weeks at a time, which just isn’t an option in their current 2 story.

Definitely great points. Having a first floor bathroom wasn’t ever up for debate for us. And we are lucky that our garage entrance is just a tiny step. Makes accessibly great.

Ugh I seriously don’t know how you did it with only that bathroom upstairs. I am so thankful for our tiny half bath downstairs. Especially for future potty training situations! Our laundry area is upstairs too which is amazing. However, when you’re laying in bed at 11pm wanting a midnight snack, walking downstairs just seems cruel. :p Oh and we have exactly 15 stairs too. I know because they haunt me at 11pm every night.

I love your style. Round mirrors are my obsession lately. I like anything that is simple and clean and you have got that in the bag for this cutie of a bathroom!!!

Potty training was pretty much impossible in our last house. And recovering from a c-section was a nightmare. But, first world problems.

We painted our tiny tiny bathroom a really dark gray (Valspar Lincoln Cottage Black) and we loooooove it! It really makes the fixtures pop in a really dramatic way. The one complaint I have is that our bathroom ventilation is not the best, so we often notice streaking on the walls. I can’t wait to see what you choose; all your inspiration photos are beautiful.

Yeah, that makes sense and I hadn’t thought of that. Our last house had darker green walls and I noticed the streaking, too.

Those floors!! I still love them! Are they cheaper at Lowes versus Menards? I didn’t know Lowes carried them!

I think menards is cheaper but I couldn’t find them online to link.

I painted our main floor powder room (fancy-talk for tiny toilet closet) Behr Beluga. It’s ALMOST black, but has a rich quality to it that I just love. It’s the same color I used for the kitchen at my last house. All the details in the room are white and shades of gray; white tile, white trim and door, white vanity and sink, white oversized mirror/medicine cabinet, black and white art… I should bring a color in, but keeping anything “decorated” in this house is a disaster waiting to happen.

Love it! I just painted my son’s (also Henry) wall (just one – otherwise the bad guys might come) black. the others will be white. His bunk beds are kelly green and dresser is wood. Such a fun color scheme! I just need to hang some pictures (super heros) and then take some pictures!
