A Friday "Wow" Moment

May 28, 2010 by Kim Woodward

Do you ever learn something, and think, “Wow… how did I never know that?”

Well, that’s what I thought when I read about this tip for keeping herbs. According to the most recent issue of Whole Living magazine, you can keep your herbs fresh and perky for a week (or more) by keeping them in a vase with fresh water. Like a bouquet.

Genius! I usually refrigerate them. But, this is better. They look pretty, too. Like a pretty bouquet in my kitchen.

It’s recommended to refresh the water every day for the longest lasting herbs.

But, I’m not fully enlightened, because it wasn’t until I was uploading these photos that I realized I actually bought parsley instead of cilantro. (And, I buy cilantro all the time and am currently growing it.)

Dope!

We also wrap them in wet paper towels then in ziplock, being careful to get the air out, and stick them in the fridge. But your way is much prettier.
Oh, and do you know about green onions? If you put them in water, they will regrow. Snip what you need, and the green part will keep growing. Change the water often because it starts smelling oniony.

Never ever thought to do this – great idea!

That IS an excellent tip, however a warning: I once left (out of pure laziness) a bunch of cilantro in a plastic cup with water for ohhh, maybe 2 weeks? That water was the worst smelling thing EVER. and the plastic cup? even after many many washes, I couldn’t get the stink out. So don’t be lazy, and don’t use plastic 😉

Totally dope! I always store my asparagus in a container of water in the fridge, I suppose this is the same concept.

it’s too funny because this “tip” has been in several home magazines the past few months and i’ve always kept my herbs this way!! i LOVE it and it makes the kitchen smell SO good!

Wow Great tip… and I just learned from the comment Amanda left that I need to do this and plant rosemary!

That’s a great tip, Kim! 🙂 What do you think are the easiest herbs to grow? I know I need to do rosemary this summer b/c the mosquitoes here are awful, and rosemary is a natural repellent. Guess I need to pot it??

I buy parsley all the time when I’m trying to buy cilantro – or vice versa. Without. Fail.

Love this idea, and they looks so bright and fresh, too.

i started doing that when in lived in peru, where i could get massive quantities of cilantro for cheap and had very limited refrigeration capabilities. i really like the fresh smell it gave to the kitchen. =)

also, not really home-related but something interesting and herb-y–i learned recently that if you rinse your hair with green tea after your normal shampoo, it will add a very natural red tint to it.

I’ve heard about this but never tried it. You can also do the same thing with asparagus. The herbs are looking especially fine in that white pitcher.

ohh! I love this tip – especially since my herbs tend to go bad in my old fridge quickly. Also? They look so pretty!! Thanks for sharing, Kim!
