In case you didn’t know it’s possible, you can freeze cookies. I don’t know about you, but this information is LIFE-CHANGING at the Woodward casa!
Because if you are like me, you make a batch of 36-or-so cookies, when you really only need a few. (Or a dozen. I don’t judge.) If I make three dozen cookies, my husband and I will eat … a lot of cookies. And then some of them will still be not as good in a few days. It’s a rough life we lead.
So, since oatmeal chocolate chip cookies have become a very important part of my pregnancy diet but I’d prefer to not gain 1,200 pounds in the process, I’ve begun to freeze the extras and make a half-dozen or so at a time. I just roll the dough into little balls, freeze them for a few hours on a cookie sheet and then pop them into a ziplock bag for the freezer.
Then, I have individual cookies that I can pop in the oven when I’m in the mood. (I’ve found that I can put the frozen cookies right in a 350 degree preheated oven and let them cook a little longer – around 15 minutes total. I usually pull them out half-way through and smoosh them down with a spoon so they are flat.)
And, if you are interested in my go-to cookie recipe, here it is. Nothing fancy, but gets the job done.
Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies
2 sticks butter (room temperature)
3/4 c. sugar
3/4 c. brown sugar
1 egg
1 tbsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
1 3/4 c. flour
2 1/2 c. oats
Chocolate chips
Combine butter, sugar, brown sugar and vanilla in mixer. Add egg until combined. Add baking soda and slowly add flour and oats. Once mixed, stir in chocolate chips.
Roll into small balls on a cookie sheet and flatten. Bake at 375 degrees for 9-12 minutes.
So, friends – go forth, freeze and eat cookies!

Oh, great idea! I usually triple the batch when I bake, and end up eating everything! Thanks for the tip
I usually am too lazy to make the balls and freeze the dough in a log – which I then have to defrost in order to make the cookies, creating more work. I’ll have to stop being a bum and do it your way. Because yum.
I love freezing cookies because you never know when you’ll need them (right now) ANNND you can just eat them right out of the freezer if you’re impatient 🙂 And Sarah is right, the cream biscuits freeze fabulously. So do Paula Deen’s cheese biscuits and sweet potato biscuits… Just saying! Mmmmm
I sometimes think of doing this when I’m making cookies. And then I just make the whole batch. And then eat the whole batch. And then wonder why I did that? 😉 Way to go you and your self control! 😉
I do, however, LOVE making cream biscuits this way. Makes mid-week breakfasts so easy.
Those look yummy! Love that idea…there are days when I’d love to have some cookies, but am too tired/busy/or lazy to make any!
Ooo! I hadn’t thought of freezing them in pre-rolled balls. That’s genius!! I just made a whole bunch of cookie dough with Joseph and froze it in logs for later baking uses. Next time I do that, I’m definitely going this route!
We love to freeze cookies!! They are the perfect for that late midnight snack or after school. We are going to have to try your cookie recipe!!

Great idea! I need to start doing that. Instead, I make a full batch, keep a few for us and send the rest to work with Brad. I think his co-workers will be upset if I start putting this into place though.
i’m loving all your freezer menus lately! so awesome to have time savers like these during the week!
When I was in college I made my husband some CCO cookies and joked they were homemade. Well they weren’t but he still doesn’t know that and everytime we eat them I just smile. Maybe I’ll try your recipe!
Yes, I do this all the time with cookies. It’s so nice to have ready to go at a moment’s notice.
well this is awesome. last night i was just thinking: “i want something like a chocolate chip cookie . . . an OATMEAL chocolate chip cookie.” Amazing how things balance out in life. 🙂 thanks for the recipe, i will be making it today. 🙂
HI ALI!! 🙂

That’s a great idea! I need to do that with cookies at our house! Jesse will eat ALL of them in a day or 2 if I make a large batch, but this could work for a special treat here and there!
Yum. Now I want a cookie.
Oh, this is smart! I usually do the log thing, but this is way easier..
Freezing cookies has seriously changed my life! There is nothing like a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie straight from the oven – with no work 🙂 I flatten mine before freezing which cuts down a little on the extra baking time.
An an extra bonus: frozen cookie dough in the freezer for an impromptu ice cream topping 😉
I should totally do this! But then I’d miss out on being “the one who HAS to eat the rest of the cookies.” Hmmmm …. tough choice …
I just make little plates for all of my neighbors and share them. They think it’s wonderful to get a plate of hot cookies. Then, when they bake, guess who gets surprises? Yep! But what a GREAT idea!
I knew you could freeze them after baking them but this is life changing. I knew I was keeping you around for some reason. 😉
So last night… I polished off a pint of ice-cream. ALONE. Maybe baking two cookies at a time is something I need to look into. Cough, Cough.
Mmmmmmmmmmm, those look good. I can see why they don’t last at your house.
You can also roll cookie dough into a log and freeze it. You just slice (with a serated knife) and bake!
