A glossy red rocking chair

April 23, 2013 by Kim Woodward

You know it’s spring in the Midwest when …

A. Your basement floods.

B. You wear short sleeves despite 50 degree temperatures.

C. Over a 24 hour period, you witness sleet, snow, rain and 75 degrees.

D. Avoiding mud is no longer an option. So you don’t fight it.

E. You drag every piece of available furniture outside to spray paint.

F. All of the above.

If you guessed E, you are correct. Spring is here. For now. Ask me again tomorrow. It could be snowing.

But, while we had a burst of sunshine and nicer temps, I was in the painting mood.

I’ve been wanting to paint the rocking chair in Henry’s room since we brought it into the house in the spring. (It was actually the rocking chair in my nursery as a baby and was refinished by my grandmother.) Here it is in it’s wooden state, which I actually liked. It was a nice tone and provided some contrast to the room.

But, I didn’t love the stencil (which is sort of hidden by the quilt). And I really wanted some color. I was mostly loving the painted look because of these two rocking chairs that haunted my dreams.

It only took me a year, but we have a bold rocking chair in Henry’s nursery. And it’s quite adorable. Why didn’t I do it sooner?

Redchair1

I actually started painting it with chalk paint that my mother-in-law bought for me in the color emperors’ silk. I ran out of my sample size  of the color when I was half-done. Instead of getting more, I decided I didn’t really like the color anyhow. So, then, I hit it with some spray paint (and spray primed the areas that weren’t painted with chalk paint). I’ll eventually try chalk paint again for another project, but the glossy finish really makes me happy for the chair.Redchair2

It fits quite nicely in the nursery. A nice little pop of red in the corner.

Yes, I think it turned out quite nicely.

A quick and easy little project. Perfect for springtime, when nothing is safe from me and a can of spray paint.

Do you like the pop of red?

I love the pop of red! It looks perfect in the nursery. We will probably inherit the rocking chair that I had as a baby, although I think I’d prefer something more comfy. Do you find that you use the rocking chair a lot?

I love the color. It is perfect with the blue. I love that you made a room that will easily transition into a big boy room.

I love that pop of red. It looks great. The rocking chair that I had in Tristan’s room was also the same one from my childhood that my mom rocked me in. And I too, did not like the stencil on it, but I was afraid to paint it. Maybe if we have another one, I will paint it. I’m not crazy about the wood color anyway.

The red is awesome. I’m always scared to paint things red, but I think I should get over that. So worth the potential of a few extra coats in the end. Henry’s room is one of my favorite rooms…not just nurseries…ever.

Glossy red anything is always a good idea, but this is genius. Love it!

    Let’s see B & C!
The red chair looks awesome. I think we actually have the same rocker! Ours has gold flowers on the top of it. Not exactly my favorite so it was moved out of the nursery a while ago (and replaced with a squeaky glider…curse you squeaky glider). Our rocker was passed down from Kevin’s family so I wasn’t allowed to paint it. Henry’s nursery is just precious, and I love all the red and blue!

The chair looks GORGEOUS in red! Great color choice. I love how nicely it plays with the navy blue and white you already have in there – can’t go wrong with classic color combos!
