Window coverings on a budget

June 15, 2016 by Kim Woodward

Because we are in the middle of nowhere, window coverings aren’t necessarily needed for privacy.  (Unless you are concerned about privacy from frogs, coons and deer. Which I’m not.)

However, the light that comes through the windows during the day is so bright that something was necessary – to prevent the heat, sun damage and bright light. And we had many large windows and we don’t have a lot of spare dollars lying around.

We have had shades in our last two homes – fabric Roman shades in our first home and bamboo Roman shades in our last house. I loved the fabric shades, but they had horrible cords that got tangled up all the time.

So budget was key. As was cordless. And – I think I found the perfect cordless Roman shades on a serious budget. Which means I have to share with you, my budget and home decor-loving friends.

I was able to get all the shades for about $20 each with coupons and ebates. TWENTY. FLIPPIN’. DOLLARS. And I love them. Love them way more than what I paid for them.

These are the Dover Cordless Roman Shades from JCPenney Home in gray. (I also bought the linen color for our bedroom.)

You simply pull them down (NO CORDS). And then you push them up (NO CORDS).

We had to go with two shades on the largest windows, which means that sometimes the shades aren’t exactly even. And when they are lifted the shade pleats aren’t perfect. But that doesn’t bother me in the least. I actually kind of like it. It’s very casual chic, don’t you think?

These shades block a fair amount of light and heat from the sun, they look good up or down, and they still show off all the great woodwork.

Just thought that someone else may need some budget-friendly shades. Don’t forget to use ebates and coupon codes.

It helps a lot! We added trim to our existing windows but in so doing made them an odd size for window coverings on a budget… but if we do two it will work. Thanks so much for responding!

Hi, maybe this is a dumb question, but I’m wondering nevertheless… How did you mount two shades on the window, can they mount together? Or is there a placein the middle of your windows that you mounted that I can’t see? Thanks. 🙂

They are mounted on the top of the window – and they have their own mounting so it’s pretty simple. Hope this helps.

We have these in Nell’s room and I like them a lot – I just wish they had a blackout option. I’d seriously pay double for blackout 😉 they look awesome, Kim – love the gray!

Looks great, did you ever consider a built in bench in the dining room?
