The (finish this) house list

July 26, 2016 by Kim Woodward

For the last four or five days, Ryan’s been off work and we’ve had a strict, “No working on the house” policy.

We’ve pretty much stuck to it.

This is the first time in over a year that Ryan has been able to take off work without something pressing he had to finish on the house.

We had a wonderful time “staycationing” together and filled the time with day trips and even one night at a nearby watermark. Now, we nap. And talk incessantly about dinosaurs. And return to our regularly scheduled house building work.

One would think since we are already live in the new house, it is complete.

But one would be wrong. Who is this one we are speaking of anyway?

There will probably be projects in this house forever. Like, long-term, we need to save tons more money, not necessary for everyday living projects. Like hanging things on walls. (The walls are so beautiful and I’m just not ready yet.)

But these are not the things I’m talking about today.

Today, I’m talking about things that are more essential – things like installing ceiling fans and trim. Things that keep the house from looking like a home that’s still under construction.

We actually physically sat down and made this list last week because:

  • I feel better when we make a list.
  • Ryan responds better to a written list we agree on than my incessant nagging.

We have already been making progress, but I thought I’d share the list here anyhow. Lest you think the house is already perfect and complete. (Snort. Giggle.)

  1. Install the fan on the porch.
  2. Finish installing kitchen shelves and doors and hardware
  3. All upstairs door knobs.
  4. Install bifolds upstairs.
  5. Paint last door downstairs.
  6. Front porch and stairs
  7. Bring in and level dirt in yard. (And then plant perennials and bulbs before the snow flies.)
  8. Caulk windows and install screens.
  9. Get our bed off the floor.
  10. Add wall storage in Henry’s room.
  11. Create and install closet and pantry storage systems throughout house.
  12. Add shelves in bump-out in the dining room.
  13. Plaster seams in garage drywall.

None of these projects impair our ability to live here. I can live in this house, even without door knobs and shelves in the closet.

Although, my quality of life will increase dramatically when the cabinet doors are installed and I no longer have to look at the clutter that should be hidden.

And once we finish this list, we can move onto more fun things.

Like WHATEVER WILL WE DO WITH THAT BARN?

(I know you’ve been wondering about that, too.)

As always, I know the feeling! I’m so glad you and your cute family could have some downtime together! Breaks are absolutely needed.
