Stumped – home style

May 8, 2009 by Kim Woodward

This is something that’s been bugging me. I’m feeling stumped and I need your help.

What style of house do we have?

(These are the things that keep me up at night…)

I’m leaning towards cottage style.

  • Small and informal
  • Tall, peaked roof
  • Large, multipaned windows
  • Wooden shingles (which is originally had)

But, now I’m wondering if it’s a ranch. The top story was actually an add-on.

  • One story
  • Usually rectangular
  • Plain, usually without ornamentation

And finally, I read about Cape Cods:

  • Steep roof with side gables
  • One and a half stories, with one or more dormers
  • Centered plan front door
  • Hardwood floors
  • Multipaned, double-hung windows with decorative shutters
Don’t they all kinda sound the same?

What do you think?

Solve my mystery!

I think it’s cottage-y w/ a hint of Cape Cod. Whatever it is, I love it.

We must be destined to be BFF’s b/c questions like these keep me up at night too. The other night I finally fell asleep after I decided that yes, the vase does look good on the mantel.

As soon as I saw it I said (to myself) what a cute Cape Cod house.

I am thinking it is a Cape Cod ranch style cottage. How helpful am I?

Love the colors, and the little touches.

Hmmm, I don’t think it is a ranch at all. I’m thinking it is more cottage with a Saltbox flare.

    Yep, cottage it is.

I say cottage. I just found your blog via http://www.allbowerpower.blogspot.com/

    It is absolutely adorable!

From another young 20 something, newlywed, recent home owner 🙂

I would say it’s mostly cottage, with a little ranch and cape cod thrown in.

Its a tight race between cottage and ranch but I would say Cottage. I also think cottage style houses are oh so cute…so it gets my vote

I’m voting for (darling) cottage, although I thought of bungalow, but don’t know what the definition of it is.

My vote is for cottage. Lot’s of character, just like the example.

You have my dream paint colors on the outside of your house. We just bought ours and the previous owners painted everything (inside and out) peach before putting it on the market.

I can’t wait to get rid of the peach with lovely sage green. Would you mind sharing the name and brand of your colors? They’re perfection!
