Small changes, big smiles

September 14, 2009 by Kim Woodward

Do you ever do something small around your house that just gives you joy? It happens to me a lot. Every small project we do really makes me smile. Then, it’s time for the next smile-worthy project.

Since both houses are – for lack of a better word – “done,” it’s fun to be able to do little things. Things that don’t take much time or money but make me happy nonetheless.
This weekend – we did a little swaparoo in the bathroom.
Before:
A pretty standard towel rod that came in a set. It just held towels that were never used, because it’s a pain to make anything on a rod look “good.”

Inspiration:
Chris at Just Beachy installed hooks in her bathroom, explaining that it looks better than a rod for drying towels. *Lightbulb* We could add hooks for our upstairs bathroom instead of hanging our wet towels over the top of the shower curtain.
After:
I was planning to pick up 5 or six hooks and put them on a board like Chris. But, when I got to the hardware section at Target, I realized it was $4/hook or $20 for a set already put together. So I picked it up and Ryan and I put it up when I got home. Ten minutes later, I was happy.
Within 24 hours, I had Freecycled our towel rod and someone picked it up. (She was thrilled to get a barely used towel rod. I was thrilled to be rid of it.)
Easy-peasy. And, it really makes me smile every time I was by. (Don’t worry, it’s level. The photos just don’t look like it.)
I call that a success.
Have you done something in your house that wasn’t difficult or costly, but still gave you joy? Do tell.

    I love it!
I asked my husband what he thought of the idea for our bathroom and he said “eh, I’m indifferent”. We’ll see if I can convince him 🙂

The hooks were the perfect addition. I think they actually make your room seem larger :).

Simple solutions. Simple pleasures. Lovely outcome.

LOVE the hooks – and the colors in your bathroom.

I wholeheartedly agree! We have hooks too and once you go towel hooker, you never go back. Uh….wait, that sounded wrong. Yours look FAB!

I get a thrill out of small improvements. And I walk by them at least 10x/day just to admire them.

I like it!! We have hooks in one of our bathrooms but because it is often humid here we have to be careful because they can get yucky because they don’t dry as fast when hung on a hook!

I love it! I think it makes the wall look wider too! We have a rod in our bathroom for hand towels, but hooks for the towels Hubby and I use.

The little thing that gives me the most joy in my house? Cleaning the kitchen counters. It makes me feel all clean and responsible and grown up.

Okay, now that I re-read that, it sounds weird, but that’s how I feel. :o)

I’d take hooks over a towel rod any day. Love yours.

That is one of my number one rules for life. It has to make me smile. Let me tell you, it has really cut down on my desire to buy something that is “good enough” for the house as that doesn’t work with my rule. Exercising a bit of patience means that I find the perfect thing that will make me smile every time I go by it. 🙂

Love the hooks by the way. So pretty and casual. Makes me feel right at home.

Love the hooks; they look great! I have hooks in my bathroom for towels too.

Thanks for stopping by to say hello!

LOOOOVE this. Growing up, my mom had a peg rack for our towels – it was so much easier for 3 kids to just hang a towel up than fold it neatly over a rack.

We have hooks on the back of our bathroom door – in the shower part of the bathroom. But I might just copy you and do this in our guest bath. Love it.
