Patriotic Living Room Update

July 4, 2012 by Kim Woodward

Hope you have a wonderful holiday today!

In honor of this patriotic holiday, I’m sharing a little patriotic living room update. Nothing major. No money spent, but I like the way it turned out.

First, the backstory. Do you ever see a room in a magazine and think, I would love for my room to look like that? Well, that was exactly what happened when I received the most recent issue of Country Living (one of my very favorite publications). I’m a little bit country and traditional, so that cover image really stole my heart.

I like the Americana feel of this room, and that it feels so comfortable. It immediately caught my attention. Then I started breaking down the room in my mind:
– Red and white quilt over the back of the sofa
– Navy striped pillows on the ends
– American flag pillow
– Pretty quilted  pillow
– Blue baby pillow in the middle
– Vintage soda crate on the coffee table
– Books
– Flowers

“Hmmm,” I thought to myself. I actually had these things on-hand. And I had tons of navy blue fabric and pillow forms from the nursery to make pillows, too.

Now, I don’t have a white sofa. Or all those gorgeous white shelves behind the sofa. But, I thought I could create something with a similar feel.

So, I did what any normal person does on the day before July 4, I did a little living room revamp with the cover room as the inspiration. Here’s what I came up with:

Okay, so no one will ever mistake my room for the cover image of Country Living. But, it has some similarities, no?

Like the soda crate that was in my kitchen. I think it’s pretty cute on the coffee table.

Or the pillows and the quilt. I whipped up the striped and gingham pillow covers in the matter of a few hours to fit some pillow forms I already had. They are simple envelope backs. The fabric is from IKEA- I had this leftover from nursery projects. The American flag pillow was in the basement, a years-ago hand-me-down from my mother-in-law.

I love having the quilt in the living room, too. I would have never thought to put it there, but I really like it. It was on the guest bed until it became the nursery. It’s a favorite of mine, so I’m thrilled that it’s out of the box in the basement.

I also added some new pillows to the other chairs in the room –

And that, my friends, is how a little inspiration can make me feel like I have a whole new room. Hurray!

Happy 4th!

I think your room could be on the cover of Country Living! The puggers would need a spread, too. 😉 Beautiful 4th sprucing!

Haha, I saw that cover on Caroline’s magazine and thought it was fabulous, too. Love how you took the inspiration and made it your own for zero moolah.

Very fancy! I hate when bloggers are like “I had all of this stuff on hand.”….and I’m like “Schah right.” But I actually believe you on this one. It looks so cozy!!

Cute! I love Country Living also. I can’t believe you did this with a newborn. I pray that my house can look 1/2 as cute in a few months.

Do you love the bike pillow? Did you get a deal better than $19.99?

We are watching the Tour de France right now as I write, my husband is bike obsessed. Thinking about ordering a pillow of my own 🙂

I love it! Those spur of the moment, use what you have on hand re-decorations can be some of the best!

I think it looks great! White sofas are unrealistic, especially with pets and kids in the house.
Enjoy your 4th with your new patriot!
