Painting chevron stripes on textured walls

June 23, 2014 by Kim Woodward

This post brought to you by FrogTape. All opinions are 100% mine.

Are textured walls a Midwest thing? Because it seems to be pretty standard to have textured walls here in Illinois. And textured walls can be intimidating when adding stripes or patterns. I was intimidated. But I’m not anymore.

My friend Tia saved my rear recently. And since she wanted a chevron wall in her new nursery, I asked her if I could bring over the new chevron FrogTape’s Shape Tape and repay her kindness.

Most people bring donuts or coffee. I bring FrogTape® and a positive attitude.

The new Shape Tapes™ come in patterns like chevron, wave and scallop and can be picked up at all Menards and selecgted Target and WalMart stores.

The tape takes all the tricky measuring out of creating patterns on painting projects and has a special PaintBlock® Technology – which creates a barrier and seal for paint to avoid bleeding. (More information on their website.)

I had never done anything like this – no stripes in my past painting projects. So, this was a bit of an experiment.

We measured up from the floor for the first line – the floor was relatively level already and we wanted it to look level with the crib against the wall. (Read: We didn’t have a level.)

There are two backing liner strips on the Shape Tape™, so you can remove half of the liner first to make it repositionable so you can get the shape straight and level. Then, we took off the bottom strip and used a vinyl transfer tool to get the tape stuck well to the wall (a credit card would also work). How to paint chevron on textured walls1

We did have some trouble getting the tape to stick to the walls – it could have been the texture or the sheen of the base paint. But, we were able to get a good application by using the tool. And my favorite part of the tape is that there’s a line in the center to use to measure and level. Super handy. How to paint chevron on textured walls2

To keep the paint from bleeding, start with a quick coat of the same color paint from the base.

Then, two quick coats of the chevron accent color – in our case, white. How to paint chevron on textured walls5

Once the coats are completed (doesn’t need to be dry), pull the FrogTape® from the wall carefully. We were so excited that the line was super clean. There was hardly any bleeding at all.How to paint chevron on textured walls6

The first base coat and the PaintBlock® Technology really seemed to seal the chevron shape. Look at that perfectly clean line.

The chevron style is a bit smaller and narrower than those I’ve seen before, but I think it turned out great! And the tape makes it so simple – we finished the entire process in a couple hours. (Most of the time was spent getting the lines straight and watching paint dry.)

So there was plenty of time to get donuts afterwards. I mean, not that I did that.

me = inspired. our baby room is going to be a light gray, very similar to this, with white baby furniture. I think to add some pizzazz, we will be using the frog tape as well! Definitely something a little more different than a normal stripe.

I have some chevron and the wave leftover. I’d be happy to send it to you if you want.

Frog tape is the absolute best for stripes or any color blocking painting. Love the chevron in there. I like the placement of the 2 lines. I bet it’s gonna be super cute with all the nursery stuff in there! Now I want donuts! 🙂

That looks really good! I love the smaller chevron stripes, especially for a nursery!

Textured walls up here in Alaska too! Glad we’re not the only ones. Definitely makes adding decals harder.

It does. But I will say that – having both textured and smooth walls – that textured walls wear better.

Thanks, Katja. I was a little nervous about the smaller height but it turned out well in the end. Sort of whimsical for a nursery, I think.
