On Monday, I mentioned the DIY space slime we made for Henry’s space birthday party. It was great for kids to play with and it made a fun favor that the kids might actually use at home. (Especially with those rad space placemats.)
This is a craft that Henry and I have been making all winter and spring. He loves making different colors and playing with toys and figurines in the slime.
The best part – it’s super quick and simple.
What you’ll need:
- 8 oz of school glue (We bought 2/$1 at the Dollar Store. No need to pay for the brand-name stuff.)
- 1 tsp Borax (find this by the laundry detergent)
- Water
- Food coloring (Gel food coloring seems to work best)
Steps:
- Pour 8 oz. of glue into a large glass bowl.
- Mix in food coloring of your choice.
- Add 1 tsp of Borax to 1/2 cup of warm water. Stir it up until dissolved. Slowly add the Borax water into the glue mixture, stirring as you go. You won’t need all the water. Just keep stirring and stirring and then use your hands to mix it in. It will take a minute or so, but it will begin to take shape.
You don’t want it to be too gooey or watery – it should be flexible but not sticky. (Here’s an older picture showing the consistency.)
- Once the slime is prepared, you can play with it or store it away. If it’s in a closed container (or Ziploc), the slime will last for months.
(P.S. These are the cups we used for Henry’s party. They were perfect for a small bit of slime to take home. I added the square labels from Tiny Prints for the perfect customized touch.)

Omgosh Sam made some slime with cousins a few months ago and absolutely loved making it attack his various paw patrol and miles figurines. Must be a favorite little boy activity. We made some glitter slime at a friends bday but it was the liquid starch kind and we didn’t care for it nearly as much as the borax version. We definitely need some more so thanks for the recipe!
