Halloween with the Train Man

November 4, 2014 by Kim Woodward

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.

Holidays with kids are awesome. Everyone should have a kid. For holidays alone.

This year, I decided to go “simple” with Henry as The Train Man. Why? Because, duh, he’s obsessed with trains. OB-SESSED. That meant that I already had a few train overalls and hats, and I knew he’d wear the costume. Plus, it was something he would wear again and again.

Also, it was easy.

Also, we read the book Train Man about 42 times every day. I have it memorized.

So, train man was a hit for Henry, despite not being nearly as crafty and creative as the first two years. (See my little baby Oh Henry! bar and Ditka.)

This was our first year trick-or-treating and even though it was insanely cold and windy, it was magical. Okay, mostly magical.

The magical part? When my little train man said “trick or treat” and “thank you” over and over again.

Or when he yelled out “ALL ABOARD” over and over again with this expression.Train man trick or treat NewlyWoodwards2

Or when he couldn’t go to another house until he checked his candy, for the 100th time.Train man trick or treat NewlyWoodwards3 Or when we stopped by my papa’s house for trick-or-treating.Train man trick or treat NewlyWoodwards4

And I can’t forget when we went to a party the next night and he picked up the candy bowl and just made his way around the whole party giving people candy and saying “trick or treat.”

I mean, I could have just died because my heart nearly exploded.

But let’s talk full disclosure here. Here’s the non-magical, real life part.

These are the two BEST photos I got of my family dressed up. Because, darn it, I wanted a good picture of my husband the train man and me as Rosie the Riveter. But little train man wasn’t having it.Real life family photo halloween2

Ryan’s expression in the second family photo = GOLD. Frame that ish.

Love your tiny train man! Halloween is SO fun with kids. I never got that excited about it in the past, but it’s so fun with Forrest. He loved trick-or-treating so much this year, and was adorable the whole time. We went with a few friends, and for some reason he really latched on to one friend and sprinted straight to her after every house to show her what new candy was in his bucket. I’m glad you guys had such a good time!

Lol. You guys look adorable, and sounds like you had a fantastic Halloween! We barely got a picture of little Kev in his costume and had to practically hold him down to get it on him…even though he loved the costume the night before. Toddlers.

There is something about pulling the camera out when everyone is in costume that makes a child lose their mind, right? I have similar photographic evidence of a screaming toddler for family photos. Oh well.

But you know how much I love a family that dresses up together so I had to leave a comment to let you know how adorable you are.

haha… absolutely. “Real Life: Not Made for Pinterest”. We didn’t manage to get any good photos of Katherine and me both dressed as Doc McStuffins because my husband was fighting with his car’s brakes – what was supposed to be a simple job turned into a nightmare right before sun down… darn! But such is life. My heart nearly exploded when my shy girl ran around confidently trick or treating with her little friends. Henry passing out candy – I would have DIED!!
