A dresser

June 14, 2011 by Kim Woodward

Lookie what I brought home last weekend…

I spotted this little cutie at a local antique mall for $80. It’s certainly not cheap, but compared to some of the prices I’ve been seeing on Craigslist and at stores in the area, I think it’s a fair price. I’ve been looking for a few small dressers for the new house, so it caught my eye immediately.

The wood isn’t in horrible shape, but it has a tiger stripe treatment which isn’t our style, so I’m thinking paint will come to the rescue. And the style is pretty close to one of my inspiration images. I love it when that happens.

I’m thinking it will probably live in the dining room. So maybe it will turn yellow, to play off the curtains?

Or maybe grey? Or white? Or black? I don’t know, we’ll see. I have a few things to do before worrying about decorating, but I’m excited about the new piece. It’s been a while since I’ve painted furniture, so I’m itching to get started.

What do you think?

I, too, own a Tiger Striped Oak claw foot, but with a swinging mirror. Oh, PLEASE, PLEASE do not paint this beauty!!!!! Mine is worth hundreds of dollars!!! Please don’t ruin the value of a fine piece of history.

Does it have claw feet!? It’s super-cute!

So you decided to go with the Dwell fabric for the curtains? It’s all going to look amazing when you’re finished!

I’ve been painting tons of furniture lately- I love what a big difference it makes. I love that shade of green from the inspiration photo. My guest room is going to be gray and yellow. I like this gray dresser (I have one in there to paint). http://pinterest.com/pin/34289178/

I vote black. It’s the new black. And the old black.

I love it! The feet are the best. I can’t wait to see it what color you choose and the finished project. 🙂

The thought of someone painting a beautiful quarter-sawn piece in good condition reminds me of the 1970’s, and makes me want to cry.

What a great find! I love the lines of it and it would look great painted. But, and this surprises me coming from the queen of painting wood, I am loving how it looks unpainted. I can’t tell if it is beat up in the picture and that would change my mind, but I love that wood grain. Do what you love though, because you are the one to look at it everyday and need to love it. How fun to shift from the renovation to decoration mindset!

On a totally unrelated note…I may be an idiot but how are you inserting your pinterest images into posts?

I love the green color in your inspiration picture. Your new find would look so cute in a bold color. Can’t wait to see what you do with it!

It’s got nice lines! Lots of potential! I can’t wait to see what you do with it. I actually haven’t painted any furniture so far in my DIY adventures, but that’s on my summer list. Get Dad’s paint sprayer and go to town on ALL of my furniture.

I love it! That style isn’t easy to find so I think $80 is well worth it 🙂

PS – I shared a link to your lovely casserole carriers on my blog today. Love those things!

I just saw pretty much the exact same dresser on a re-run of Sarah’s Cottage, it’s so pretty! I think she painted hers yellow with white drawers. Can’t wait to see what you do with it. 🙂

I love it the way it is! I wouldn’t paint it yellow though, or I think it would disappear next to the yellow curtains. What other colors are in the dining room? That green “inspiration” color would be pretty, or a dark red (my fav. color).

I think gray or a new dark stain would be really pretty!!! Great find. 🙂

Oh man, I love the lines of the dresser! Can’t wait to see what color you pick. I’m itching to paint some furniture, too. Just can’t decide what color and where to put it.

OK I guess I am alone in this opinion… but PLEASE DON’T PAINT THAT! It’s probably worth more than $80 to someone else, and you’ll ruin its value by painting it. Wait for a piece that truly needs a good paint job.

Love it! The claw feet and tiger stripe oak make it almost the brother of our matching dining room tables!

I kind of love the idea of a bold mustard yellow – not matchy matchy with the drapes but something that will make statement. I love this yellow piece at the Pleated Poppy: http://thepleatedpoppy.com/2011/04/get-real-a-house-tour/

But, if yellow’s going to look too matchy matchy, I think gray would be perf.

    W. Kimberly antique mall? That’s where I found my lovely dresser!

I think it’s perfect. I’ve been wanting to paint a piece of furniture yellow but have no place for one in my house..that I can think of..which means you should totally do it. 😛

Actually tiger oak goes for $$$ in our area (even on Craigslist). This is a great find!

I wouldn’t go with yellow-it’ll compete too much with those lovely curtains. Any other color you selected would look nice!

I love it and $80 for a solid old dresser is a good deal. You can’t get a particle board new one for that. I can’t wait to see what you do with it!! I am getting so excited for you to move in and start the decorating.
