DIY sink storage from hardware store items

November 2, 2012 by Kim Woodward

Sometimes, you just have to solve problems in your home. Problems that may be small, but still bug you.

Like storage around the sink.

In our home, there’s simply a lack of storage around the sink.

There’s the different soaps and brushes and IT WAS DRIVING ME TO DRINK! (Not a far drive.)

I felt like it took away from the lovely sink and faucet. So, off I went to my favorite local hardware store, where I started wandering with Henry in a cart. The owner asked me four times if I needed help. I think I was making him nervous wandering in the electrical section.

Eventually, he came over one last time and I told him what I was trying to do. I ended up heading to the register with two cake pans, coupling and epoxy to attach them. (And the owner of my local True Value wants me to make sure that we all know that attaching a coupling to the cake pans makes it very NOT FOOD SAFE. Okay?)

I liked the direction it was going. But, then, I spotted a bathroom storage canister and realized that would work 100 times better. So, I added that to my cart and high-tailed it out of there.

I wanted something that elevated and contained everything I needed near the sink. So, I tried a few configurations of the cake pans and coupling and storage canister and ended up preferring the look of the larger cake pan with the canister.

So, essentially – this was the easiest project ever. I just used the epoxy to attach the canister (without the lid) to the cake pan. (I did it outside, because that stuff is pretty potent.) The epoxy instructions said it took 10 minutes to “set.” So, I put a heavy casserole dish on it for that 10 minutes. And I used that time to clean the sink. Which was pretty badly needed.

10 minutes later, I had a really cute little pedestal that held soap and a washcloth and brush in a mason jar.

The original plan was to epoxy the mason jar to the pedestal, but I like to be able to throw the jar in the dishwasher so I nixxed that.

Doesn’t it look better?

It solved a little annoyance, so I’m thrilled.

And now I have a clean sink, so I think that makes me a crafting mastermind.

I think it’s incredibly adorable that the TV guy was worried that we should understand that it’s not food safe now. 🙂 Some decent peeps are still out there.

I like it! We have sponges and soap and all kinds of things around our sink. It would be nice to get organized.

Such a smart idea. I hate how the brushes are all over the place. I definitively stuck them in a jar after reading this 🙂

Awesome. I like that it’s raised up so that sink gunk (i.e. water, soap, debris) can’t get caught under the pan part. Great idea.

Wonderful! (My sink catch-all is a clay sausage roaster in the shape of a pig from Portugal.)

Tell your hardware guy that an epoxied cake pan, aside from being non-food safe, is impossible to bake in…

Great solution! It’s possible that I have been known to clean around the bottles instead of moving them. Possibly.

Thanks so much for linking up AND for being our cheerleader! 🙂

What a great idea!! And it must be so easy to clean around the sink now – you just have to move your pedestal container instead of each of the individual bottles!

I really like it!! Everything crammed around the sink bothers me but I haven’t found a good solution. I love how nice and clean and organized yours is now!

(I also finally went out and bought myself a soap dispenser that functions after my thrifting disappointment)

Wow, I love your kitchen. What I can see of it anyhow. Very cool counters with the farmhouse sink, tile backsplash, and open shelving. I can see why you care about having your sink properly organized, don’t want anything to detract from the look. The organizer fits in really well. Very cool.

I love it – cake pans can be used so many ways leave it to you to think of a new one :o)
