Dining room revamp

June 13, 2009 by Kim Woodward

Thanks for all your kind comments about our bathroom and living room. You know how to make a girl (and her hardworking hubs) feel good.

Now, it’s time for room number three in our little Home-A-Palooza. Hopefully you aren’t too terribly tired of La Casa de Woodward yet.
The dining room is the only room that had the original hardwoods showing. But, they were still not in the greatest shape.

Plus, there were the obvious updates – painted trim, walls, ceilings, new light fixture fit for a dining room. Then Ryan handled the floors. (I’m going to come back with a more detailed post about refinishing the floors, since it seems to garner a lot of interest.)
Here it is before quarter-round and finishing the windows. We lived with our massivo desk in the dining room for the first six months, until it moved into the office and we moved upstairs. Kinda strange, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
(Ryan had to have that desk when he spotted it in the back of an antique store an hour away from our house. If you are married to a man like Ryan, who almost never wants to buy anything, you buy the desk. Pronto!)

Here’s the dining room from another angle, right after we moved in (Note the devil dog standing on the ottoman in the background.)

Our original set-up.

Post-desk-removal and dining-set-painting. We also added the clock and another hutch.

And our painted hutch.

What do you think, friends? Should I paint that little corner hutch black…or white… or leave it alone?

So, there’s the dining room. And I have to put it on the record that we eat at this table every night. I know some people don’t use their dining room, but we definitely do. Love having this space.

While Ryan would love me to say this room is finito, I have a few more plans for the dining room as well. Stay tuned.

I love everything after the update. I think you should paint the little hutch either black or white. I wouldn’t leave it though with the other furniture painted black. 🙂

Sue – I’ve never regretted painting the trim white. I love it and would do it over in a second. But, I’m also a huge fan of painted wood (hence all the painted furniture). I also would have never had the patience to strip and re-stain everything.

I think it also helps that we have wood floors, so I still get some original woodwork in my life. =)

Do you every regret painting the trim white. We have a very old house with nice dark wood but some of it is painted or not in good shape but I am so afraid to paint it.

Very nice work on the floors.

And I also got a kick out of “Franco the Maitre De” is he in charge of seating?

    Wow, it looks amazing!

You know my answer to the corner hutch would be “paint it white” … because that’s my answer to everything!!
