An untraditional holiday table

November 21, 2011 by Kim Woodward

We aren’t hosting Thanksgiving, but that doesn’t mean I want to miss out on all the tablescape fun. It was actually a great time to come up with an untraditional table for the pre-holidays.

It’s sort of like pre-gaming, only prettier.

Because I wanted to coordinate the holiday decorations with our dining room decor, I think I’m going to use silver, yellow/gold and turquoise for Christmas. And since we’ll be out of town for Thanksgiving, I thought now would be a good time to test the color scheme. I think I love it.

For my DIY aspect, I rolled the votives and taper candles in epsom salt to give them a snow-kissed look. (Easiest project ever.) They really turned out pretty – perfect for winter.

I had pretty much everything on-hand. I did buy the teal Christmas ornaments and the silver scarf, which I’m using as a runner. (And which I plan to wear as well.)

The plates I purchased last April from Crate & Barrel are finally put to use. I added a teal ribbon and a silver charger.

While not at all Christmas-like indivdually, it still feels very festive when placed together.

I placed the mirror I painted a few weeks ago in the center of the table and added a bunch of silver pinecones and ornaments around the candles.

So the Woodward household has officially transitioned from fall to winter… at least at the dining room table.

I like your nontraditional blue. I actually have some candles and a box of epsom salt sitting on my craft table just waiting for me to find time.

I really love your tablescape! This year I am doing a ‘peacock’ theme for our table. Untraditional but so pretty. Great job!

Oh my goodness! I’m drooling over your scarf/table runner! I love the texture that it adds!

And the epsom salt candle trick? So neat! Makes everything look fancy.

I really think the color scheme you chose perfectly compliments your dining room as a whole. Great job, Kim!

I really and truely could not love a table more than this one. The color combo is genius and way to go on the epsom candles. Please puhlease tell me what you rolled on the candle first to make them stick. And hmmm, think you can dye salt to make it another color? I’m dying for it to be mint green.

Love love love! The yellow plates and teal ribbon are unexpected this time of year but PERFECT! I participated this week! And I’m having trouble with the linky – so I either entered it twice or not at all, but it won’t let me try again…

I totally forgot to comment on this last night. I was commenting to Nate on how this is how you were supposed to set a table. He nodded.

I LOVE the color combo…and those epsom salt candles are perfect!! I’m pumped to see the rest of your Christmas decorating magic.

I love that color combo – so neat 🙂

I won’t be linking up this week because we are fully in the swing of Christmas prep around here and ate every meal this weekend at our coffee table – not exactly DIY worthy place settings 🙂 See you next week though!

You are so right, all those colors separately don’t say holidays, but put them all together, it screams festive! Love it!!

Kim, you are a genius! I love the color combination and I am loving the use of Epsom salt. I need to pin every picture on this page. I am so happy your new dining room is being put to such good use!

Kim – I love it! Not just because our wedding colors were gray/yellow/turquoise, but because its “untraditional”. We have a white Christmas tree and decorate with “untraditional” colors. I love those yellow and white plates from C&B.

Augusta doesn’t have C&B. Its super sad – I’ll have to live vicariously through you!

i LOVE that!!!! i have recently been obsessed with the gray/yellow/turquoise color combo, and this is so close to that! i think it’s great that it’s non-traditional. you did a fantastic job! i’m glad to hear the epsom salt trick is easy – been wanting to try that.

(ps- it’s a good thing you are hosting this or i would never have a post to post anymore these days!)
