A pinwheel quilt for my newest nephew Spencer

September 17, 2013 by Kim Woodward

Here’s a fun fact for your Tuesday: I am a master procrastinator. If I have a project on my plate (and I normally do), I wait until right before it’s “due” to do it. It’s not a good quality in myself. It’s something I’m working on.

Sort of.

I’m not really working on it. I’ll get to that later. Right before I have to.

I say this because just about every quilt I make ends up being something I spend the night before my deadline frantically finishing up. But all’s well that ends well, right?

Such is the case with this fabulous pinwheel quilt for my newest nephew Spencer. Because Spencer’s nursery was completed in a really cool transportation theme (I’ll show you some details tomorrow), I thought a pinwheel quilt would be perfect. (The pinwheels remind me of plane propellers.)

So, several months ago, Michelle helped me put together the pinwheels for this quilt. And then they sat for weeks and weeks in my sewing room while I frantically finished other projects that were due sooner. And then Spencer came a week early and the quilt wasn’t done. At which point I kicked it into high gear and finished it in time to meet him for the first time last weekend.

And I know I say this about every quilt, but I think this is my favorite quilt yet.

I actually want this quilt in a king size for our bed. It’s just such a charming pattern, no? And the colors are just perfect, in my opinion.

I packaged the quilt up with a few onesies and burp cloths in a basket I found at Gordman’s. I thought it’d make a great hamper or toy storage for the nursery. (There’s a great big Route 66 in the nursery, so it was great luck to find this.)

And I couldn’t post without sharing my handsome nephew. I sniffed his head. A lot. There’s just something about babies – they smell so good. I like to kiss this baby, too. It’s hard to avoid it.

Welcome to the family, Spencer. We love you already.

Who is with me on the baby smell thing? Or the procrastination? Or anything else, really?

I’m really sorry, but I don’t remember – I typically aim for them to be at least 32 inches wide by 40 inches long. My guess is that it was pretty close. I started with 5 inch squares to make the pinwheels.

I love this quilt. I am a newbie quilter and have been looking for a simple pinwheel pattern for a king size bed. Don’t know why, but I just love pinwheels.

I love this pattern. My husband and i are going to be redecorating our bedroom with Grey as the main color. I am a beginner quilter and have decided to make this design in grey and cream, and turn it into a duvet cover. I am so excited! I just need to purchase the grey and cream dot.

I’m sorry – I didn’t use a pattern. But, if you find a half-square triangle tutorial (there are tons online), you can easily use those squares to make this quilt. Good luck!

Love this quilt Kim. What I love most about it is that it is timeless! Cute for a baby but doesn’t look babyish!

Great quilt. I love the contrasting colors and how they make the pattern pop. I am so in your boat of being a procrastinator. It is hard to stop when you are so good at it, though.
