A little fall decor in a little house

September 14, 2015 by Kim Woodward

One of the hardest times to live in the barn is when a holiday rolls around.

I love decorating for holidays. And have boxes and boxes (and boxes) of holiday stuff to prove it.

But, I guess living small is just an opportunity to find my very favorite “stuff” and display it. And it also makes me realize that maybe (just maybe), I can part with some of those boxes.

Maybe.

No promises. (Ryan.)

Since I shared some of my pumpkin mania outside last week, I’d share the small touches of fall I’ve added inside. Nothing major, but I think it feels cozy. And with the addition of open windows and fall scented wax warmers, it’s feeling like autumn at the barn.

It’s just a matter of adding some of my favorite fall things, and getting rid of the remaining remnants of summer.

The little pumpkin display above is on our open shelves in the kitchen. I love clearing this tiny area for a holiday display. (And that wire pumpkin was given to me by a friend and made by her dad. I love it.)

On the other side of the kitchen, I added just a few pumpkins to the island. The wall got a new cow canvas secondhand from a friend, which I love so much. I think we have a subtle cow theme going on here. Subtle, right?

In the living room, our wall of photos feels very fall-like to me as it is.

I recently purchased some new bedding that is a little more “us,” and feels perfectly at-home at the barn. The patriotic colors could feel very summery, but I think it works all year for living in a red barn. (I simply couldn’t pass up the red and white striped quilt when I spotted it at home goods.)

The pumpkin/wagon pillow is such a fun addition and really makes the red and white feel like fall. It’s from CraftberryBush on Society6. I mean, we actually have a wagon of pumpkins. It was fate that the pillow came to live with us.

I also rescued my DIY candy corn pennants from the crates in my parents’ garage to hang above the bed. Henry loves them as much as I do.

By the door, I found a little area on the windowsill for some fresh sunflowers. These are the last of the flowers that we planted in the garden. Most were gigantic and not really for cutting. But these little guys are just so cute. I want to plant more of these next year. If only I could remember what they are.

And I couldn’t forget my pumpkins. They really are everywhere. (The cute milk can vase was from the Target Dollar Spot.)

It’s probably too early for Halloween. Or is it? I don’t know, but I added the banner to the door. Because I don’t plan to change anything up at this point. We’ll see.

So, I guess I did add quite a bit of fall-ness to the barn. Living small doesn’t have to mean no seasonal decorating after all.

Have you been getting in the mood for autumn?

Haha I love that you’ve snuck in fall decor throughout the barn! It’s still so hot here I can’t even think about fall. I’m sure by the time it cools off it will be Christmas which is probably why I don’t have any fall stuff. Maybe you can send me a box. 😉

As someone who is not a natural seasonal decorator, I think I might find a small space less intimidating. Everything is looking great!

I felt depressed when the holidays rolled around last year because I didn’t have a front porch to decorate, or much room in the apartment to go crazy. But I just tried my little heart out to be content with where I was at during that time. It was also hard because Justin and I have NEVER spent a holiday at home. We always travel. So the holiday decorations go up but we never get to enjoy them. This year I let everyone know we weren’t going anywhere and if they wanted to see us they could come our way for the holidays. So yay for enjoying the holiday season at our own house around our own tree for the first time ever!!!

Anyway, I apparently just made this all about me. :p I love all of your decorations, that barn is the coziest cutest apartment I have ever seen. You do such a good job of making a warm space for your family. My favorite part is the banner on the barn door. Man I love that door so much. Still waiting for my pumpkin growing tips!!

Is your new cow painting an original or a print? Any idea where your friend got it? It is fantastic!

It’s a canvas print. She bought it locally but I just spotted it on bitsofvintave today – I think it’s the same one https://www.bitsofvintage.com/homestead/farmhouse-cow-canvas-print.html#review-form

Sweet little vignettes you’ve created with the space you have. I’m not there yet – it’s going to be in the 90s this week and our pool is open for another week…but I can feel Fall starting to creep into the mornings and evenings so in a week or so, maybe I’ll pull out the fall bins!
