If you visit our house and my son is home, he will immediately drag you up to his room to check out how giant it is! (It’s 10×10.) I love that living in a tiny space has changed his perspective on everything. In a great way.
But because many of you cannot visit (whyyyyyyyyyyy????), let’s take a little mini tour now, shall we?
It’s abundantly clear my kid is 100 percent mine.
- His face. I mean. Geesh. Poor duder.
- He never shuts up. Like. Never. (My heart now goes out to my parents and husband, who have been going through this for 30+ years.)
- He loves to make other people laugh.
- He can be moody – let’s blame it on being a creative type.
And, just like his Americana-loving momma, he loves anything in red, white and blue. If you ask him his favorite colors, he’ll say “red, white and blue.” Could you die from that cute?
So, I pretty much let him pick what he wanted in his room. What do I really care? Especially when we have the same favorite colors. He picked the wall color from my stash of colors (Behr Seared Gray, again).
It’s really dark and it’s a tiny room, but it works and he loves his blue room.
The curtains were found in Phoenix last March at a closeout store and passed Henry’s red, white and blue test – they are Pottery Barn Kids and blackout and the bomb dot com. They make this room pitch black, which makes them worth a billion dollars to me. But I picked them up for a song.
We used everything we could that we already had (the bed, quilt and most of the furniture were in his past room). But I tried to let Henry choose anything new we brought home.
He picked up all the “decor” (loosely defined as all the stuff Henry loves) went up on the DIY pegboard.
We also created a little book nook for him behind the door. This was the space between the ductwork and the wall and my dad suggested leaving it open for extra storage.
Ryan was able to create all the shelves from scrap wood. (He is a wood hoarder – the man will not throw out anything!) I painted them with the same white trim paint. It’s the perfect way to store all the books with room for a big bin below. (The bins are from the Target Dollar Spot.)
The yardstick is totally not measuring correctly because the baseboard is too tall. Oh well. Henry loves it all.
The truth – I haven’t managed to hang anything on the wall yet besides the pegboard and the yardstick. It will all come eventually. Tiny rooms aren’t built in a day. Or even in several months at our house.
I’ve already expressed my love for that pegboard :). And the book nook is fabulous–I love it when no space is wasted! I’m all for letting kids pick the paint color for their rooms. Unless they pick orange 😉

Can you trim off a bit of the measuring stick and then stain the cut edge? If I remember correctly you were making marks on it to record his growth. That is such a great tradition and you have a great spot for it.
I love it! Especially the pegboard…and the shelves. We just moved my youngest son into the bigger bedroom that was once his sister’s and then his older brother’s room. It was that dark blue just like your son’s room. Ethan wanted to leave the color. I was thrilled I didn’t have to paint over it.
This is a beautiful room, and the pegboard is EVERYTHING!
I loved Henry’s nursery, and I love his “big boy” room! Especially how proud he is! I’m also a fan of red, white and blue (especially when it comes to clothes and decor for little boys) so the train nursery I’ve been working on for our little guy arriving in approx. 5 weeks is done in those colors plus gray. And actually, there’s a good chance his name will be Henry as I’m trying to convince my husband that it’s a great compromise to the Harry Jr. he wants!
