How’s that for a descriptive title?
Hey, here’s a tip for ya. Wait until July to mulch your yard. Stores are practically giving away the stuff.
What was that? Normal people mulch in the spring? That’s the NORMAL time to mulch?
Hahahaha … I don’t know what you are talking about.
Seriously. I’m not listening to you.
We are getting dangerously close to getting our house on the market, and one of the things we needed to do was re-mulch the yard. We’ve waited until now because we wanted it to look as fresh and pretty as possible.
And clearly the universe wanted us to wait until now, too. Because the mulch was dirt cheap and the weather in unseasonably cool. (Hey. Remember last year when it was so hot we thought we were going to die and I said we would never mulch again?) So we didn’t yell at each other once during the mulching process. Which is a win in Woodward-land.
In case you are curious, I’ve blogged about mulch 1, 2, 3, 4 … a lot of times. We lead very eventful lives.
So, here’s how it turned out …
I can scarcely believe that every single plant in this yard (save for the trees) were planted by Ryan and I. And almost all of them were transplants from friends or our past house. That’s landscaping on a budget, if you ask me.
The side of the house looks so much better this year. Ryan spent tons of time this spring trying to get the grass to finally grow, and his hard work paid off. We have a green yard.
And all the shade from the trees makes it comfortable, even on the hottest of summer days.
When we mulched this year, we changed from darker hardwood mulch back to cypress mulch. Because it disguises any leaves better and was so much cheaper.
My irises look a little sad because I split them up and moved them around. But I’m giving them a break because moving is stressful.
Say what you will about mulch. (Does anyone actually say what they will about mulch?) But it makes the yard look dang good. (Check out Ryan’s boots I forgot to move for the photo. It’s practically styled.)
We bought a full pallet of 80 bags. Most people would get a truck-load at that point, but we find the bags are easier to handle and the price was actually right in line with buying it by the ton. I badly need to paint these chairs, but it’s still a cute little fire pit area.
I’m so happy with how the yard has come together over four years and for very little money. When we purchased the property, there was no grass and no landscaping (besides two horrible bushes in the front).
Hello, beautiful.
And now, it’s looking loved. I think we’re just about ready to sell this house. At least from the outside. (And now that I’m seeing the photos, I need to take a can of spray paint to that light out front.)
People would be crazy to pass this house up? Right?
Mulch. Success.

We haven’t mulched yet either! It’s been one of those summers. Where did you get yours from?

People don’t realize how much mulch does for curb appeal. I tell them all the time. They never listen. And then they finally do it… and get an offer. BOOM. Your house will be sold in no time.
Heather says
Never thought about buying mulch this late in the season. Might have to go to the store and look at prices. We have rocks in part of our yard, but I want to take a couple weed beds that aren’t practical to mow and replace them with mulch.
Your house is looking great!

Sure looks like it’ll sell fast!

Fingers crossed.

That’s a good tip about waiting till the mulch is cheap. We haven’t mulched this year yet either! The outside is looking great – I know it will sell quickly!
Kim Woodward says
Thank you so much. Crossing my fingers that you are right.

The yard’s looking great! It’s so true about mulch; it DOES make things look so much better. Which is too bad, since it’s such a pain to deal with.
Kim Woodward says
Seriously. Mulch is the devil. But it’s a necessary devil.
Rachel says
Only you, Kim, can make a post about mulching fun to read. The house looks SO good!
Kim Woodward says
Thanks so much, Rachel. I’m honestly so exhausted and just hope it sells quickly.

your yard is the cutest! and mulch always helps. and your title has great SEO. isn’t that hot?
Kim Woodward says
Totally hot. I get that a lot. “Girl … your SEO is so hot.”

Mulch (and butter) makes everything better. How true. It looks great!
Not to be a Debbie Downer, but cypress mulch is something we used to use, until we were told that it is not sustainable. The cypress trees are being ground up for mulch and just can’t be replaced fast enough. I like the way it looks too, but we’ve gone to pine bark and pine straw instead.
Kim Woodward says
Really interesting about the cypress trees. I’ve never heard that.

Ha! Love the blog title 😉 Looks good!

I always say what I will about mulch. Yep. Mulch makes everything better right? Or is that chocolate. Anyway… I love your styled moment with the boots. It’s still lingering… Your house looks so welcoming and I think you will sell it in no time. The curb appeal is certainly there.
Kim Woodward says
Mulch and chocolate. Totally the same thing.

How is the rain barrel working out?
Kim Woodward says
Well, that’s a good question. Our gutters need cleaned so they aren’t giving us ANY RAIN IN THE DOWNSPOUT> The whole thing makes me stabby because it’s been a year of record rain and we haven’t gotten to use the barrel at all. But it’s on Ryan’s list to clean the gutters. Just in time for us to move.

Nice work with the boot styling. It adds the element of people living there. Spot on my friend.
And the mulch looks nice!
Kathe says
The mulch looks great! Love all of your cheery pops of red too. Truly a beautiful home 🙂
Kim Woodward says
Thank you so much, Kathe. What a kind thing to say!
Kim Woodward says
I actually thought about adding a branch to the boot to make it feel really lived in, but I was too lazy. And I never really thought that.
