The Woodward Pumpkin Patch

July 6, 2010 by Kim Woodward

Have I ever told you about my dream to have a pumpkin patch? It’s right up there with having chickens.

I’m planning to turn into a farm girl someday. Just need to find that farm. Someday. Anyhow… I planted baby pumpkins last year and had a bumper crop. However, those pumpkins took over the garden. I loved it and Ryan didn’t. So we didn’t plant pumpkins this year.
However, the pumpkins had another idea. They took off from our compost pile by the garage. (We composted all our pumpkins last year.) There are pumpkin vines everywhere! We’re having to pull them out of the alley every week. We haven’t needed to water them or weed them.

It’s extra exciting, because we don’t know what types of pumpkins will be coming up. They could be from our garden or they could be the pumpkins from the farmer’s market. There are more than 50 blooms so far.

It was clearly meant to be.

Even Ryan agrees.

They’re resilient little bastards, aren’t they?!

As much as I love summer, your talk about pumpkins make me yearn for fall. Pumpkins, changing leaves, football, Bailey’s in my hot chocolate. Aw yeah.

Fun!! But what an odd spot for pumpkins ha. It really does mean you were meant to have them.

Wow, that is definitely meant to be! I have been tempted to try cooking with my squash blossoms, but I’m too lazy to figure it out.

That is so neat! I really want a Pumpkin Patch but I don’t think they would do well in the massive amount of heat and humidity we get down here 🙁

How cool! Have you ever seen the kids’ book “spookley the square pumpkin”? All the pumpkins in the book are different shapes, colors and patterns (stripes, dots). Maybe that is what you’ll have.

Yay! I had the same pumpkins-taking-over-the-yard experience a few years ago… this year we just threw seeds into a sunny spot in the woods and were pleasantly surprised to see something growing. Fingers crossed we’ll actually get gourds!

I love all things pumpkin. I swear, the fall is my favorite season because everything is spiced with pumpkin.

Have you thought of receipes yet? Mmm… pumpkin bread would be first on my list. Om nom nom.
