Using containers for simple kitchen organization

February 26, 2013 by Kim Woodward

I’m on a mission to purge and organize. It’s something fairly common at the start of the year, I believe. There have been several great posts on other blogs recently about organizing your kitchen (one of my favorites is Tidy Kitchen Tips by Decor and the Dog).

As usual, I’m a few months behind.

But while I tackled cleaning, assessing and reorganizing our kitchen, I realized that for me, the issue was maintenance. I can spend a day cleaning the kitchen cabinets and drawers, but in 6 weeks, they will all be a disaster again.

So, I went to my tried and true method of keeping ANYTHING organized – containers.

I’m not a naturally organized person. I like things neat, but for me that means out of sight. This leads to disastrous closets, cabinets and drawers. Because if I can close a door or drawer, it doesn’t matter how messy it it behind there.

So bins, baskets and other containers are my tried-and-true way to keep things organized. I use containers in the bathroom for hair and makeup products, in my linen closet for first aid, tools and cleaning supplies; in Henry’s room for toys and supplies; and in the living room for media, cords, remotes and toys.

Why had I never considered using containers to corral kitchen clutter?

I got creative and used containers I already had to organize the cupboards in a way that was maintainable. Once I figured out what I was lacking, I spent a mere $5 in Dollar Tree containers to finish the job. Here’s how I used them in four of our most disastrous areas of the kitchen …

For spices

The spice cupboards were the first I attacked. This cabinet is rather narrow, so I wanted to make the most of the space. I had previously used the tiered spice organizers like these. I love the idea of these, but in practice, I rummaged through everything to try to find a spice and not put everything away nicely. Thus, it always looked terrible.
I started by going through everything and getting rid of things I didn’t need or were out of date. That still left me with a lot of things to store.
I found these Tupperware containers I purchased a year or so ago to store snacks and rarely use. (It’s just easier to keep the Cheez-Its in the box.) They are the perfect width for this cabinet and almost the exact depth, too.
  • The top container holds all my teas, which allowed me to throw out all the packaging that was taking up space. (Other beverage mixes that are used less frequently are next to the teas.)
  • The large container in the middle are less-used or oversized spices that don’t fit on our countertop spice rack. (Steak seasoning, Krazy salt and others make it in here.) Next to this is a Ziplock that I filled with all spice packets – chili, taco, Italian dressing, Ranch. Nothing fancy, but the Ziplock keeps everything corralled.
  • The bottom level is my baking level. The small container are the tiny little spices that I use rarely – pumpkin pie spice and the like. Above that is a bigger container for baking items – cocoa powder, baking powder, vanilla, etc.

On the door, I finally put a little hook for my measuring cups.

After organizing everything by containers, this area has stayed so neat. When I’m baking, I pull out the entire baking container. When I’m done, it all goes back in the cabinet. Keeps everything looking really nice and neat. The key is everything having a place.

For bulk items

I really wish I had taken a before photo of this corner cabinet. It was embarrassing. Unfortunately, corner cabinets often become dumping grounds. After pulling out stuff that needed to be tossed or relocated, I had a clean slate. I used containers I already had for rice, oats, and baking items. (The rice and oats containers are from IKEA are the best for rice and oats because they have a measuring cup built in. The containers on the bottom level are actually from the hot cocoa bar at our 2007 wedding.)

I already had the chalkboard labels from a past project that never happened. I love that it adds a little consistency to all the varying containers. (I think a simple black piece of cardstock could have worked just as well if I didn’t already have them.) I used a chalk pen to write the contents.

The lazy susan is a must, in my opinion, for corner cabinets. It allows me to use all the space and not resort to rifling through everything to get to the back. (I got mine a few years ago, it’s similar to this.)

On the top shelf, I stored all the little-used items that I want to keep on a lazy susan. Not pretty, but practical.

For produce

One thing on which I insisted in this house was a dedicated pantry. I wanted a space to store my small appliances where I could find them easily. Ryan built in this closet pantry, but I quickly filled it with stuff that didn’t have a home elsewhere. It became the land of forgotten small appliances. While organizing, I pulled out all the small appliances I never or rarely used. They got relegated to the basement, where they will stay until April. If I don’t use them by then, they are getting sold in a yard sale.
With the space left, I added some storage for produce, which was desperately needed.

I’ve always had a hard time corralling produce. I used to put the fruits and veggies out on the counter in a large bowl or hurricane, but I really hate having things on counters. Then there’s the challenge of potatoes and onions and garlic …

These yellow bins are the only things I purchased – I picked them up at the Dollar Tree when I realized I didn’t have anything that fit the bill for these items. They are nice and sturdy and keep all the stuff contained without mess from the “skin” of onions and garlic.

I planned to pick up two more of them for fruits and veggies, but for now, I have them in a basket I had on-hand. (I prefer the plastic bins for produce in case there’s any leaking. Much easier to clean.)

As you can see, the small appliances I used most still have their own spaces on the top two shelves (juicer, waffle maker, tea kettle, tea jug, 2 slow cookers and a KitchenAid).

I also LOVE having the three slim Simple Human trash cans in the pantry. They are out of the way from the dogs and Henry, but easy to access. They are for recycling, trash and dog food. I plan to eventually add labels to them, too, because guests often get confused.

For drawers

Finally, I tackled the junk drawers. Yes, drawers plural. We have great drawer space in this kitchen, but I was mostly filling them with junk.

Flatware first – I ended up getting rid of our “old” flatware that I had been hanging onto. I bought this fabulous Fiesta a few years ago after Thanksgiving, but I pretty much just saved it for special occasions. No more. I’m going to use beautiful things I love everyday. So, I’m selling the old flatware and using my colorful stuff. I also added containers to the drawer for serving spoons, measuring spoons and baby spoons. Nothing fancy, but I was able to use organizers I already had.

Next up – I made a office drawer. I used a drawer organizer I had to keep my pencils, pens, calculators, chalkboard pens and the like. Then, I added small mason jars to fill the extra space – perfect for chalk, candles and other things we’d like to keep contained.

Finally, a maintenance/tool drawer. All DIYers need one of these in every room.  I used containers I already had to corral all my Scentsy waxes, bag clips, and hardware. I love using mason jars for smaller stuff. And then I had plenty of room to add a paint brush, hammer and tape measure.

So, those were some of the ways I was able to corral kitchen clutter by using containers. Plus, I was able to do it with containers I already had. If you don’t have containers lying around – think of using other things you have – diaper boxes, Oats containers and the like. Be creative.

I’m linking this post up with my friend Emily at Imperfect. who’s hosting a great series on living more with less. This is something that really resonates with me as I try to be conscious about bringing less “stuff” into my home and keeping too much “stuff” around. It brings me too much stress for my house to be packed to the brim with junk that I don’t need.

For my kitchen purging and organizing, I had two garbage bags full of things to get rid of – out-of-date food, packaging and the like. I also had two Rubbermaid totes of never-used utensils, silverware and small appliances. I’ll be selling most everything in a spring yard sale or on Craigslist. What remains will go to Goodwill.

Next up in the living more with less series is the dining room. Stay tuned.

What about you?
How do you control your kitchen clutter?

I really need some good organization and a place for our potatoes, too. I totally thought those scentsys were baby food containers! HA

Holy smokes, Woodward, this is like 10 different organization posts wrapped into one.

I like the Lazy Susans in your corner cabinet. Maybe that’s what I should do with our Lazy Susan. Currently, we only keep spices in our kitchen cabinets– the rest of our food hangs out in our walk-in pantry. I really need to work on our kitchen organization and get rid of a bunch of stuff we never use.

Your office and maintenance drawers remind me that I still need to organize our junk drawer. It’s a HOT MESS.

It looks awesome! I need to figure out something for my produce/onions/garlic, maybe I’ll give this a try. I love your kitchen, too. Just love it.

The colorful silverware? LOVE. So cheerful and made me smile. In fact, I like you based solely on your silverware choice. Those knives just scream, “Kim is awesome!” 😉

I just noticed Emily was doing the live more with less link up. I already decided to declutter my house for Lent, so I must get on board.

Also, you leave the sweetest comments. 🙂

Looks great! I definitely use a lot of bins/baskets to help control things in our cabinets and drawers. Without it, our place would be a disaster!

Looks great the containers really make a difference. Are those all Scentsy bars I spy in the maintenance/tool drawer?

Mostly I just skim posts about kitchen organization because they make me feel….like I should do that, and I’m just not ready to feel that way yet. But I had to day that I LOVE your flatware. LOVE! And, yeah….good job organizing. You are a stronger woman than I am.
