After painting our dining room table, chairs and hutch, I had the itch to paint our corner hutch as well. It was given to us by my parents (Surprise! A hand-me-down) and it was originally light oak. (Sorry about the poor before shot. You get the idea.)
Well, I took your advice and finally painted it white. I’m happy I went with white instead of the black of all the other furniture.
I think I love it.
I don’t think my dad’s heart can take me painting another piece of oak furniture.
It really seems to break his heart. But, I cannot stop. I love painted furniture. And my mom reminded dad and I that they did GIVE it to us. =) haha…. poor dad.
I used oil-based primer and the same white paint that we used on all our trim. Ryan added a few new knobs (from a stash of hand-me-down knobs from Ryan’s parents). I think it really brightens up the corner and looks great with our bright Fiestaware.
What do you think?

I absolutely, positively want to sneak into your house in the middle of the night(or while you are out) and steal the cabinet and ALL you Fiestaware! LOVE! My whole family, fiance included, is nutters about natural wood. Grr.
I love the oak table and chairs painted black. It looks modern and chic instead of like a hand-me-down piece of furniture.
Love the colorful dishes and the cabinet re-do! Looks great!!!
Thanks, everyone!
first of all I want to thank you for commenting on my new blog (the one with the stuffed pumpkins tute). your comment brought me here! A little spooky reading your post, we have a lot in common. I also have been wanting to paint something white because I have a lot of black (still trying to convince my husband of that) and it says in your profile that you are in Illinois, and I just got back from living there for the summer. My dad is also a total wood guy and I grew up thinking that I HATED painted wood, only to discover that I ♥ it! Thanks so much for stopping by my blog, it means the world to me!
DIY was a big success. Looks great!
See what you think of the paint job over at mine.
What a great difference! It really makes the dishes pop, painted furniture is pretty fun!
It definitely finishes the room off. Looks wonderful, especially against all the black. Great job!
Looks absolutely fabulous. I KNEW your fiestaware would look goregeous in there when you finished it. It’s just one more wonderful project that you have completed! I can’t wait to see what you do next!
Love it! It looks fantastic!
My dad was the same way about painting wood…especially oak. It would make him crazy!
the cabinet looks fantastic. Much better than plain, ol’ regular oak…LOL
Good job.

ps … will you update me blog in your blogroll? that seems so strange to ask, especially since i haven’t added that feature to my blog (yet).
i love it! it looks great! and love the new blog look, too!
So crisp and gorgeous! It just makes your fiestaware POP.
I truly believe old wood is totally ok to paint over (unless it’s flooring but I don’t need to tell you that– you expert floor refinisher supahstars, you).

I love it white! It looks absolutely amazing. You did a great job. I love the knobs too.
I love it in white! The Fiestware really pops against the white — more than I think it would have against the black. I’m actually considering getting something very similar for my dining room, but I think I’m going to have to get some Fiestaware to go with it now!
Looks great. I love painted wood also, I almost break out in hives when I see a wood grain.
I am jealous of your fiestaware! I only recently began collecting it. Ebay rocks.
The hutch looks gorgeous! I always have a battle in my head about painting wood. But yours really turned out nice.
I KNOW I love it! The white really makes all your beautiful fiestaware pop.
I’d love to try painting furniture, but I don’t have the heart to paint wood. Instead we’ve refinished our dining table top and my desk top.
I’m a huge fan of black-painted things, but the white really makes all of your accessories pop! Way to go!
I too was raised with the “painting wood is sacrilege” mentality. Part of me can’t quite willingly take a paintbrush to something with a beautiful stained finish. To get around that, I buy 2nd hand or already painted pieces. I have no qualms about slapping another coat of paint on something already painted or in super rough shape. You are a braver woman that I and it looks great!! I really like the white. Nice job!
I think it looks fabulous. Love white and black mixed together. I think when we painted our table, the giver was a little thrown off (but it was given). I don’t apologize – if I don’t love something, I turn it into something I love and there’s no shame int hat.
I love it white..at first I thought black would be better but the white turned out GREAT!!!
looks great!! i hear ya on the oak – it’s just much better white. what a colorful dining room you have!
I think I love it too!
Really cute!
Yep, I think I love it too. 🙂
Looks so pretty with the colorful dishes inside!
My dad is the same way. We painted my parent’s beautiful oak mantle a few years back and he still seems sad everytime he goes near it. It looks so great though–just like your piece! Love the fiesta too! Great job.

Wow!! It really makes those dishes pop. Great makeover!
It looks great! I have fiesta ware too and I LOVE it!
I think I love it – great choice to now go black. I also think you work very fast.
Fiestaware is my fave! I also have mine in a white cabinet with glass doors. The white really does make the color pop 🙂
