A super scrappy Christmas tree craft

November 20, 2015 by Kim Woodward

I love projects that are a little scrappy. There’s something fun about creating projects from things you have lying around the garage.

This project was originally created in 2014 for a post on Sugar Bee Crafts. But I wanted to share it here, too. Because it’s fun, thrifty, and great for kids, too.

Last year, Henry loved helping me paint and organize the various “levels” of the Christmas tree. We actually made it for Henry’s grandparents, but we may need to make our own this year.

What you need:

  • A scrap board for the background (mine is about 12×15 inches, left over from another project)
  • Paint
  • A variety of scrap “strips” for the layers – I used a yard stick, dowel rod, decorative trim, measuring tape, and metal sewing ruler
  • Small saw and miter box
  • Glue

How to create your own:

  • Start with a coat of paint on your board. While the paint is drying, lay out all your scrap pieces for the tree and determine the order.

  • Decide the order you want them to take and cut them accordingly. (My two-year-old loved to watch me cut the scraps, but this is definitely a job for adults.)

  • Glue the scraps to the board with your glue of choice. I used Gorilla Glue and it worked great. Add a star or bell to the top. (This one is a wooden star from the craft store.)

  • Don’t forget to sign the back and date it! Henry was so proud of our Christmas tree, he carried it around most of the afternoon. (Look how LITTLE he is!)

What scrappy projects are you working on?

Oh my gosh this is adorable! The one thing that makes me all baby feverish is doing all this fun holiday stuff with them. From October 1st-January 1st I want a kid so bad. Then I recover for a little bit. Lol you are such a great mom, Kim! I’m not doing any scrappy projects, instead I’m just running around the house like a crazy person trying to get ready for our family Christmas which is here this year! Send help!!!
