Spring? Are you there?

May 3, 2011 by Kim Woodward

(It’s me. Kim.)

Despite the fact that the Midwest hasn’t exactly gotten the memo that IT’S MAY FOR GOODNESS SAKE, we are (finally) beginning to see flowers pop up here.

Okay, go ahead Southerners, roll those eyes. You were writing about your spring flowers months ago (and I was cursing you because it was still snowing here). But my lovely tulips finally decided to come up. They are just as happy and pretty as I recall.

I also spotted buds on my iris yesterday.

And the tulips at the new house are up, too. (We planted these last year and they seem to be giants.)

(I really love playing with Instagram on my new phone.)

As a whole, everything we planted at the new house last summer and fall seems to be up and doing well this spring. The iris are especially liking their new homes, and I think all the hosta we transplanted are happy as well. I’m happy we took the time to transplant a lot of overgrown plants from our house.

I was also doing a happy dance when (what I think is) a rhubarb plant popped up in what will be our vegetable garden… it’s actually perfect placement because it will be enclosed so the pugs cannot get to it. (The leaves can be poisonous.) Can someone confirm?

I’ll talk more about our gardening as the month progresses. Let’s just say I have lots of plans. (Poor Ryan.) And this week we finally got a start with the vegetable garden beds.

I love your flowers. I want you to come plan and plant my yard. I need to plant new bulbs in the fall. That looks like rhubarb. I LOVE rhubard. We had some in our garden growing up, my sister and I would just pull one and dip it in sugar as our evening snack. I bought one to plant in our gardent but you can’t harvest it the 1st years, which makes me really sad.

Ok, this really makes me want to plant some tulips! Beautiful. I think I heard somewhere that rhubarb leaves are bad for dogs/animals, too. That stuff is yummy though!

All of your tulips are pretty, but I especially love those beautiful purple ones! The few tulips that I have in my yard have already come and gone. It’s a shame they don’t last longer!

Beautiful flowers! We’re in the same boat you are in here in New England. Seems just this week everything started blooming. My street is lined with flowering pear and crabapple trees and looks completely different than it did just a few days ago. I love this time of year!

i am so stinking jealous of those tulips. i have stems, but no blooms on one side of my stairs, and a big empty nothing on the other where tulips should be. some animal seems to like my favorite flowers as much as i do. and only THEY are the ones enjoying them.

Your tulips are so pretty! I need to plant some instead of plotting to steal them from every house I walk by!

Send me some gardening dust. The one that I created and oh-so graciously blogged about with the utmost pride… is just so pitiful right now lol. Your tulips look so pretty!!

Yep, rhubarb is in good for pets so that’s a good thing they are fenced off.

I’m so jealous though of your blooming tulips! I live in Colorado and when we went back to KS two weeks ago my Grandma already had blooming tulips and they were on their way out, the daffodils were also on their way out and the iris were flourishing. I’m probably another week or so, maybe two, away from some tulip bulbs blooming. I’m a little frustrated though because I planted them all at the same time and I have some ready to bloom soon and others are really behind–all from the same bag of bulbs! UGH

    Definitely Rhubarb.

I have a Rhubarb plant too and can’t wait until I can start making desserts. Yum!

beautiful flowers! Our tulips aren’t yet open, so at least you are ahead of some places 🙂 Rhubarb leaves contain oxalic acid (I have been reading this great herb book the last week or so, and I remembered some compound that wasn’t good in the leaves so looked it back up for you) 🙂

I really need to plant some bulbs this Fall (Fall, right?) so I have some color in our dreary and dead-looking yard next Spring. It’s so….dismal. BUT. The sun is shining today and rumor is we’re going to break 60. Which would be amazing!! Come on Spring, we know you’re out there somewhere!
