So many colors, so little time

October 25, 2010 by Kim Woodward

So, the garage is going up quickly, and one of the decisions we need to make (soon) is the siding color. This is a big decision, friends.

Do I need to tell you that? Of course not. You get me.

In this house, we’ll be keeping the aluminum siding on the house. It’s just in too good of shape to scrap. The plan is to paint it in the spring. So, we need to choose vinyl siding that I will match when I paint the house.

When we chose a color for our current home, it was a no-brainer. I loved the sage siding we chose, Ryan loved the sage siding we chose. It was different than anything else in the ‘hood. (We wanted it to stand out.) No.brainer. It took very little time to agree.

And, to be honest, I kind of wanted to use the same sage color on this house. Why mess with something we love? Make it kind of our signature. But, Ryan questioned using the same color. And, he was right. We can’t just make every house exactly the same.

I want this house to be special and unique. So that means a new color

And, that brings me to the big decision. I definitely don’t like the current yellowish color.

The foundation will be white (eventually).

The porch floor, shutters and stair treads will be navy (Naval by Sherwin Williams).

I wanted grey, but the roof is pretty new and already camel/brown. So, the colors have been narrowed down to:

Pine

(I know this looks close to the same color it is. But, it’s more off-white/taupe and less yellow.)

(Inspiration via School House Electric)

Clay
(This is still lighter, but has grey undertones.)
(Inspiration via driving around)
or Khaki
This is the darkest, and the richest of the colors. It is also the largest change, which is a good thing.
(Inspiration via driving around)

(All are standard siding colors at our local hardware store of choice – Menards.)

What do you think?

(And as a disclaimer, I reserve the right to choose something completely different. As if I needed to tell you that. But, I still want to know what you think.)

Khaki..we just used this color and love the results!

Our house now and the house before his one has clay or khaki siding and personally we wished we had the sage for first choice then gray. I think that it’s ok to have a different colored roof. Go for what you like for the siding. I see that around a lot.Oh, the house nearby are white siding with blue shutters and doors.
Can’t wait to see what you end up deciding.

Ok, well I’m going against the (fake) grain (hahaha)- I like the clay. I think the Khaki is too dark and too brown. It might look dark and heavy. I didn’t know you could paint metal siding. Good to know.

    I’m voting for Pine.

But that is just because I’m a sucker for anything that is close to white. How awsome would it look with all your touches of red like the last house. Dreamy that’s what I think!

I think you should go with your gut, I’m guessing there is a color that jumped out at you as “the one”.

I first thought khaki, then pine.

Oh my goodness…………..looks like the majority agree with your mother. I like the Khaki the best. But I know that whatever color you choose will be perfect. Good luck sweetie!

    Oh big decision……

I am going to go against the crowd here and say clay. I like that it is lighter than the khaki and I think the dark blue will really pop against it.

Hopefully you are like me and everyone’s opinions on things like this are really helpful. Either because they agree with what you know you want. Or they all vote for something else which makes you realize what you want.

Or maybe that is just me:)…

I like your green & my house is a green also…however, your neighbors house already looks the same color as yours. I think you should go with a red, like pictured below: http://iseeunow.blogspot.com/2009/06/wish-us-luck.html

The prettiest house in our neighborhood is a medium grey color with black shutters and white trim, with a red door. It’s stunning! Just food for thought… =)

Honestly? I like COLOR! I love the sage of your current house!
But if I have to choose of the three you listed, I’d definitely go with the khaki. I think it’s the most different from the current color (though I’m sure the pictures make it hard to see the differences!) and it’ll look nice with your stark white foundations (which will also look nice when they’re done!)
I love seeing your renovation progress! It’s fascinating to me!

of those three i’d have to say clay. i nice ‘in between’. still gives you color without being dark.

… but i do have a couple questions. the neighbor on the right … their house looks similiar in color, like a khaki or clay. personally i’d want something different than the neighbors?

and have you considered other colors? like white? maybe red?

I like the last one, or, to be totally different, a light blue that goes with your navy. Then I would paint the shutters white. But that is just my opinion. 🙂

I really like the khaki color. It will match very well with the blue you’ve already chosen. The White of the foundation will pop and it will still match the camel brown roof.

Oh, I agree… Khaki, definitely!!! Especially knowing that you’re painting the porch a navy. Navy + Khaki will be amazing!

(Plus.. it’ll make you stand out from your neighbors. Looks like your neighbors are a light beige.)

What will you be doing with the shutters?

  59. Suzanne says

    October 25, 2010 at 12:51 PM

I like clay, especially with the blue shutters. Although I associate the khaki with new construction homes – it seems to be THE color builders around here use as default. Which is not a bad thing.

For the record, the people who owned our house before us sided it in almost the same sage green as your current house and the color was a HUGE part of our decision to buy. We LOVE being “the green house”.
