So long, junk drawers!

January 6, 2009 by Kim Woodward

Well, cleaning out our three kitchen junk drawers took longer than the fifteen minutes I predicted.

But, I’m so happy with the outcome.

Before:
We have three drawers in our island that have been catch-alls for junk. They hardly closed and were mostly filled with things that belonged elsewhere.

Look how much junk I pulled out of those drawers!

I sorted through it, filled plastic bags with garbage, garage items and office items.

And, the beautiful afters:
I bought the organizers at Bed Bath and Beyond. The extra kitchen utensils and silverware are in the left drawer and the extras that I like to have on hand (tape, scissors, hammer, batteries, notepads) are in the right. Below, the drawer holds our phone books. It’s heavenly.

The best part is that we can easily find things now. What a relief and a great way to start 2009!

Feeling inspired to empty your own junk drawers? Since I have an unhealthy obsession with Real Simple, I also thought I would share the video that I stumbled on from Real Simple Real Life about cleaning out your own dreaded junk drawer. The steps are simple, but still worth following.

So, do you have a junk drawer?? Where is it?

Wow! Incredible job! We fortunately don’t have enough cabinets in our kitchen to have a junk drawer. But we do have a chair that accumulates junk & a tray I had designated for our mail that has turned into a junk tray. Oh yeah… and that one room. Haha… You have inspired me to get rid of junk and organize tonight! Thank you!

Nice work! I hate the dreaded junk drawers. I have a hard time finding the right dividers – yours look just divine! And a whole drawer for phone books?! wow. we got rid of ours because I don’t like how bulky they are (causes a nightmare to store!)…also we have the internet so I figure I can do without 🙂

Thanks for sharing the video – I love RS too!

Nice work! I love those organizers – they look like they were made for your drawers. We do have a junk drawer – I tackled it at the end of the summer with a new organizer, but I’ve found that I need to do a monthly clean out just to prevent it from getting out of control again. That said, I don’t necessarily do the monthly clean out…
