The so-far house: Master bedroom

September 9, 2011 by Kim Woodward

It’s been nearly a week since the big move and I know you are losing a ridiculous amount of sleep waiting for photos of the new house. So, I figured I do a couple posts to show how progress is going as we settle into the new crib.
Obviously, it will take some time to really get everything put together, but this will be fun to share. And a place to begin.
The master bedroom was the first room that was “put together” for functionality. So I thought it would make sense that it’s the first to share.

The platform bed Ryan built at the old house had to be disassembled and reassembled on the day of the move. And I didn’t want to live out of boxes, I so immediately put away clothing and jewelry. I’m so happy I did, because this makes the home feel more like home.

The bed was originally supposed to go between the window and the eave wall. Unfortunately, the headboard wouldn’t fit on the wall. So, we flipped it to the opposite wall. I like it.

And I have an idea for above the bed. It’s different than the old master bedroom. And I’m excited.

We also decided to move the dresser I bought a few months ago up to the bedroom for extra storage. I love it. And I am fairly certain I’m not going to paint it. I like it now. Still nothing fancy for a finish, but I like it with the rod iron mirror my parents gave us.

And as a functional bonus, I’ve been storing my most-used jewelry on the mirror. I love it. So much sparkle.

And after taking these pictures, I realized that I could display our pretty monogrammed cake table runner from the wedding. Isn’t it just fabulous here?

And while the closet isn’t anything really fancy, it’s really huge. It fits everything well and it’s so darn bright. So, Ryan no longer has to get ready in the pitch black. (He has to be to work several hours before so he would just get ready in the dark room.)

So this is probably the biggest upgrade for us.

And as a funny aside, I woke up the first night in the house to rustling and rumbling in the closet. It was Ryan. I whispered, “What are you doing?” And he grunted, “Looking for the bathroom!” The closet door is located right where the hallway/bathroom door was in our old house. Thank goodness he didn’t get confused and think he WAS in the bathroom. He said he just kept feeling around the walls in the dark.

Still laughing about that one.

Back to the bedroom.

I love the big comfortable chair (hand-me-down from in-laws) in the bedroom. Although it makes doing anything outside of cuddling with the pugs seems downright obnoxious.

So that’s the bedroom in a nutshell. It’s come a long way, baby.

Color me COMPLETELY and TOTALLY impressed that you already have your master bedroom looking like that! What a wonderful way to set up a calm space amidst the craziness of unpacking! It looks fantastic! Now, I’m going to go back to drooling over your closet. Mmmk?

    Kim,
I have been so behind on my reading I missed your move…congratulations!! You must be over-joyed and extremely tired! The bedroom looks awesome! Love the colors of the room. I might have to use your jewelry idea for Maddie! She is in need of some jewelry organization! Can’t wait to see more.

Oh, poor Ryan. hehehe I can’t believe YOU aren’t painting the dresser. It does look good though. And I love the double use of the mirror. I’m so impressed, you’ve done more in a week than I’ve done in a year.

Your house looks fantastic! Moving is exhausting but look at all the memories you are building. One more thing about the living room furniture….we are all about comfy and had our family room set up similar to your living room. I ended up putting the two chairs that face the sofa straight instead of angled in. Have you tried that? I felt very hip and chic but my husband keeps putting them back on an angle. I’m going to win this one!

I LOVE that wood on the dresser. Totally understand why you wouldn’t paint it. Have a great weekend!

I love it, Kim! Everything looks great! And your bed … it’s huge! Ours is supposedly a Queen, but I swear, sometimes it feels more like a twin (although I guess a few kids and some animals trying to squish in will do that).

Poor Ryan. Hope he gets the location of the bathroom all figured out. 😉

Soccerbelle – the egg crate holders are from Anthropologie online. They weren’t too expensive and they are perfect for earrings and pins and other small jewelry. I got the idea from Young House Love.

It looks like you have a ceramic “egg container” like thing on your dresser and I’m wondering if that’s where you keep your earrings? Where did you get it, because I think that would be a perfect gift for my daughter.

I didn’t want to work on the bedroom because we will be moving soon and it seemed silly to put work into a room we wouldn’t be using for long. But when I received the paint I ordered for another project at the barn, I realized that the color would actually be perfect for the night stands in the master bedroom. […]
