Renovation progress report – week 50

July 21, 2011 by Kim Woodward

This week, Ryan was a bit of a one-man show. Between my trip and class, I spent absolutely no time working on the house. But he did have some help. Just not from me.

And, the biggest project of the week was the dishwasher. Dum. Dum. Dum.

Unfortunately, the original dishwasher we purchased was one inch too deep for the space.

Yeah…. I’ll let that soak in for a minute.

The $600 dishwasher that we bought, paid for and had delivered. Didn’t fit. I don’t have any pictures of it. We’re erasing it from our collective memory.

We knew that the wall had a bump out, but we were under the impression that all dishwashers were the same depth and would work. And, well, that’s not the case.

So, luckily for us, Sears has a 30-day return policy. So they picked it up the next day with no hassle whatsoever (thanks, Sears). And we were able to find a dishwasher that fit the depth from a local store so we could get it immediately. So after a bit of a detour, Ryan and my dad got the new (US-assembled) dishwasher installed.

AND IT FITS!

Ryan also installed the disposal in the sink and did a great job, if I do say so myself.

He also surprised me by painting the trim in the guest bedroom. (That guy’s a keeper.)

It really looks super good.

What do we think of the grey color? I used to hate it. Then I liked it. Now I’m not sure. I was thinking about painting it a pool aqua color that I already own. What do you think?

Ryan also worked on installing shelves and bars in the closets. So now we can hang clothes. Which will be handy.

And finally, we added a few new pieces to the living room this week.

Ryan’s parents had some nice carpet that we had cut into rugs for the living room and bedroom. (The living room rug is 7.5 x 14.) And that fabulous couch? It’s ours now.

Yay!

I love it. It’s really quite comfortable and it will be super nice to have the extra seating. It’s a relatively long room, so we just need to figure out how to set up the room and we’ll be golden.

And that is the week in review.

And I’m also pretty darn excited, because the House List is getting pretty close to complete. So, sure, there are still things to do. But, lots of things are checked. Yay!

What do you think?

Ugh, I just got a sinking feeling in my stomach for you over the dishwasher. 1,000 points to Ryan for trim painting. Our living room is gray and I wasn’t thrilled (the color was a compromise) but now I love it. Get stuff in the room and then decide (which I realize is a pain).

Geez! I go AWOL for a month and all of the sudden you have a kitchen. A rockin’ awesome, totally hot, kitchen. I think I have kitchen lust.

Wow! The house is looking amazing Kim!!! I like the color of the bedroom…maybe it shows up differently on the screen than in person? Looks very pretty and soft in the photos. I think you should live with it a bit before painting it. 😉 And the couch…can I come over and take a nap?

The kitchen looks great, Kim! I love the countertops and the white cabinets. And oh! The sink! Love! I bet it feels awesome to be making so much progress.

Wow – I am so impressed by all of the checked-off items on your house list! I’m loving the kitchen – it’s really coming together. Keep up the great work!! 🙂

The dishwasher looks great! I’ve said it before, but I’m really excited you picked black for the appliances and the details. It looks amazing.

That couch is super-fab! I just love the shape of the back and the rolled arms. You have such great in-laws.

I think the aqua would be pretty. If your not feeling the gray, why not try the aqua on one wall and see what you think in that light. Personally, I love the gray, had gray bedroom walls at the last house, and plan on painting this bedroom gray as well, but it’s all about what you and Ryan want, right?

No to the pool aqua color in the guest room. That sounds chintzy. The gray looks classy.

Ok, I’m in love with your kitchen! The counter tops, the sink, the faucet … I love all of it!

That stinks about your first dishwasher, but you will love the Bosch. We have one and it does a great job – it’s quiet too.

PS – I’m a fan of the gray. But I love all the other colors you’ve picked for your house, too, so I’m sure whatever you choose will be beautiful!

I love the gray and am about to paint gray in our entry way and dining room. The white trim really makes it look nice and you could always accessorize for a pop of color.

The grey looks fabulous! You have so much of the grey in the rest of the rooms that maybe a different color in the guest bedroom would be fun? I’d leave it and move in to live with it before repainting 😉

LOVE the new couch too! 🙂

Love the gray, but we have 4 gray rooms in our house, so I’m biased 😉 But I love it because it’s a neutral and all pops of color can be added with accessories.

Nice couch! Where did it come from?
We have an accent wall in our bedroom that is aqua and I LOVE it. Of course I’m a color person…the three bedrooms in our house are all painted bright colors (the main rooms are more subdued!) so I may not be the best person to give advice to 🙂

I would keep the grey. It’s a great neutral and would be very calm and soothing for your guests.

I’m loving the new kitchen. Did I miss an earlier post on it? Bummer about the dishwasher–how frustrating! The place is looking good! When do you officially move in?

I knew there had to be a mistake somewhere…a Bosch dishwasher is a little too high class for my cheap a$$ dirt bag best friend to buy the first time around.

Kim, I really do love the gray, but after all, it IS your house 🙂
Brian and Jessi painted their kitchen gray with white trim and cabinets. It looks awesome!

Hi! Long time follower of your blog. I love the kitchen. I am contemplating butcher block countertops as well in our kitchen.
anywho – just noticed your apron sink and dont remember seeing that in previous posts.
curious as to where you got it from. i have been eyeing them for quite some time now, but they are pretty expensive. i cant DIY that 🙂

    I like the grey.

Our new appliances arrive today. Oh, I hope the dishwasher fits. I know the hubs measured everything else, but I don’t recall him measuring that. (Nor did I think about it.) Yikes!

Love the rug. We are in need of a new one. Is it more cost effective to just have a piece of carpet cut? I hadn’t thought of that till I saw your post. Love the idea.

ONE INCH?! No way. That’s awful. : ( Glad you got it resolved quickly. And relatively easily.

Personally, love the grey. I think if you live with it for awhile (longer) it’ll grow on you. And/or you’ll stop caring. All in favor of NOT PAINTING ANYMORE raise your hand.

I really like the grey it will grow on you even more. We painted our dinning room grey and my husband wasn’t a fan at first. Now we both say it is our favorite wall color in the whole house.

I’m with you totally I’m on the fence with the grey – I really like it but it doesn’t “pop” ya know?

And dude ONE INCH tears would have been shed, thankfully you were able to return it :o).

I’m heading over to peek at your house list – and I might steal it since we are moving and I’m not nearly on top of it like you are!

Looking great! I would have thought all dishwashers were the same size, too! Painting the trim…yep…he is a keeper 🙂
