Renovation progress report – week 49

It’s that time again… time to share how we did on the renovation front this week.

Will we ever be able to use the kitchen?
Yes. Yes, we will. My dad and Ryan worked in this kitchen again this week and got a little further along. They got the microhood installed. I am going to nuke something very soon. Mark my words.

And do you spot that beauty of a sink? Hello, gorgeous.

As you can see, a kitchen curtain is going to be a necessity. Although looking into the neighbors windows seems like a great idea, too.

I wanted something simple with a tall stature and a matte black finish. I wanted a single hole fixture with a pull-down nozzle. It’s truly so beautiful in person, I nearly cried when I opened it.

Ryan’s been working on the plumbing to get the disposal and dishwasher hooked up. Let’s just say that city code expects something completely different than we’ve ever done. Annoying. And likely nearly impossible. But he’ll make it happen.

Got caulk?
Yes. 3 cases of it that we got for free after rebate a few months ago. Best deal ever.

Ryan has been a caulkaholic this week. Getting all the unfinished trim caulked for me to paint as well as caulking throughout the kitchen. Trim takes so much caulk to make it look seamless.

In the kitchen, we eventually plan to tile the backsplash, but Ryan used clear caulk to seal up really good where the counter meets the wall and sink until that happens.

Could I love this light any more?
No.

I picked this fixture up at Gilded Salvage in Minneapolis last September. Finally got it installed on the upstairs landing. I’m happy with how it turns out.

Will the painting ever end?
Not likely. First, I primed and painted the batten boards my dad installed in the dining room.

Yow-za. It really finished the room. We installed them in the same way they were originally installed (you could see where they were before someone tore them off).

I also finished painting some of the quarter round in the master bedroom and upstairs hallway.

I also worked on priming the last unpainted trim in the guest bedroom.

There is a lot of trim in the extra bedroom. A lot.

The trim in the entry finally got cleaned and painted. Now I just need to paint that darn door. And scrub those darn floors. And buy a new light fixture. I like this lantern-style version from Ballard, but I’d really like something American-made. Any ideas?

And I finished touching up all the paint in the living room.

This room is really making me happy.

I took some time to clean the living room really well this week, too. Washing windows, cleaning floors, wiping down the fireplace. Mostly because I was tired of all the dust. And it was good.

I think I’m painting the door black. Because pretty much everyone on the Internet is doing so, and I like to keep up with the trends. (Wink, wink.)

And here are the gorgeous built-in shelves. Without shelves yet. Due to the lighting, I’m considering glass shelves. So tell me how wonderful an idea that is, okay? Because I’m already waffling.

  1. love your house!! It my dream home with all that old world charm and gorgeous moldings and floors. LOVE LOVE LOVE the board and batten in the DR and stairway!! I have a question. In the pic of your cleaned up living room, there is an old sewing machine cabinet. I have wanted one of these Forever! I recently came across one at a yard sale that was in ok condition. they wanted me to make an offer but I had no idea where to even begin so I passed it up. however, the people live down the road from me and I’m thinking of going and asking if they still have it. Would you have some guidance on how much I should offer??

  3. As always- amazing! We seem to have similar taste in kitchens, as my faucet is similar but a different finish. I think that trim would kill me or my marriage.

I’ve been catching up on several months of my reader this afternoon and it’s been so fun reading the weeks back-to-back!! 🙂 I love the black door and I totally vote for the glass shelves. We have some in our dining room and they are beautiful, even if they like to collect dust! 😉 Hope you find a buyer for your “old” house soon!!

  8. So, so, so much gorgeousness everywhere I look. K, I LOVE how you’ve updated things while still maintaining the historical integrity of your house. If it all looks this amazing now, I don’t know how I’ll handle it when it’s all “done”.

    P.S. Brava to you, my friend, for all the priming/painting you’ve been doing. I’ve been there & it’s what I believe Dante’s purgatory or limbo is like.

    P.P.S. That faucet is sexaaaay!! I don’t know how we ever got by w/out pull down single lever faucets, for reals y’all. And that vintage schoolhouse pendant? I just might make sweet love to it, I’m so hot & bothered by it. (Yeah, I went there.)

  9. What progress! Question: can you adjust the water temperature with a pull-down nozzle? And does not knowing this make me someone who lives under a rock?

  11. Okay, you must tell me how you survive on no sleep! School, gardens, 2 houses, showers for friends, and on and on. I love the idea of a black door. It will match you very gorgeous faucet.

  13. I LOVE the light fixture; MN has good things huh? 🙂 I personally would be on the fence with glass shelves but really only for the maintenance factor. Are you ok with dusting/cleaning them pretty often? If they’re not well lit maybe it won’t be noticeable. You’ve been a painting machine!!!

    I am loving that faucet, we have a very similar one in our kitchen except in stainless and I love it. Maybe one of my favorite things about the kitchen.

    Yeah for getting that light fixture from MN hung. You have a great eye as it looks wonderful in the space.

    And here is my official vote on other things in case you care- paint the door black and definitely go for the glass shelves. Oh it is really coming together!

  16. Your faucet is so pretty it almost made me cry too! And I’ve always been a strictly stainless appliance person but you are opening my mind on this whole black appliances thing…they look really good in your kitchen!!

    I’m with the masses….black door and glass shelves are brilliant ideas!

  19. How many shelves are you having? Could you do one glass one on top and then wood underneath? Glass is good for allowing the light to shine through, but if you’re putting books or movies on the lower shelves then does the reflected light matter? I guess it depends on what you want to display. Glass is great, but is harder to clean. Wood shows the dust but is easier to clean on a weekly (ish) basis.

    You guys are really rocking and rolling!

    My two cents on the shelves are to go with the wood. I think a lot of the charm of the house comes from the wood details that are either original or meant to look that way. But they’re shelves so they’re easily changeable if you decide you want something different.

    I cant wait to see how you attack the decor. Cannot WAIT!

    The faucet is to die for and painting the door black is perfect.

    I’m not a fan of glass shelves, but that might just be my own aversion. When I think of glass shelves I think of the inside of old medicine cabinets…weird, I know.

    If it were me (unsolicited opinion, I know) I would do chunky shelves in a wood tone to contrast with the white. Like this:

  22. I’m still jealous of your farmhouse sink!!!

    Also, what is the black box on the ceiling next to the light you just put up? (can’t figure out what it is)

    For the shelves…what are you planning on using the built-in’s for? Another option would be do the top shelves in glass (to take advantage of the lighting), and the bottom shelf wood. That way you had a space to display books on the bottom, and decorative items on top. Just a suggestion. Whichever way you go, I’m sure it’ll look gorgeous!

    I think glass shelves will look great. Honestly I think either glass or wood shelves would look good. I guess it really just depends on the look your going for [a little modern vs traditional].

  24. i LOVE that you’re keeping the brick unpainted. I know painted brick is quite popular but i love exposed brick. Also, your kitchen is beautiful.

  26. I pretty much think everything you do is gorgeous, so yes to the glass shelves and black door.

    When I painted the wood trim in our house white, I left all the interior doors as is (stained) because we have little childrens running around putting their finger prints on everything. This has saved me a lot of trouble since finger prints aren’t as obvious as they would be on a white door.

  32. Another vote here for glass shelves! But be ready to dust and clean them a lot 🙂

    Also, what are you possibly going to do with all your free time when this house is complete? You’ll be gardening/canning/quilting up a storm when all the trim is painted and lights are installed. That vacation of yours is definately well deserved!

    Love the black door idea, and I say go for the glass shelves. The light would look great in that area…just beware of the dust!

  42. I want a black door too, they really are kinda awesome. Also, I love the shot of the side of the stairs looking into the dining room (I think?) The detail on the banister is fantastic.

  44. Glass shelves, definitely! That’ll let you take full advantage of the builtin lighting. Everything is looking terrific! I love that schoolhouse light! Thanks for sharing.
