Renovation progress report – week 47

June 30, 2011 by Kim Woodward

We’re all tired this week. But, it’s getting there. (Do I say that every week? It’s true.)

We’re also nearing the time to put our house up for sale. Eek! I’ll let you know more when it’s officially for sale.

This week, Papa Bear finished a lot more trim work, and it all looks amazing. He’s a miracle worker. He finished all the quarter round…

the trim in the extra bedroom…

the kitchen windows…

and batten boards in the dining room.

Ryan’s dad took a day off work to swap all the outlets. They look fabulous. White outlets bring me a great deal of happiness. It was super nice of him to work on these for us.

Papa Bear also added quarter round to the stairs for a cleaner break between tread and riser.

I really like how this turned out. I was a bit worried about how they looked, and they just look more finished now.

He also fixed the kicked-out area of the banister.
You know what this means? That I have a LOT more trim painting to do. A lot.

But last week, I did paint like a fiend, and still only managed to complete the living room. And I haven’t even cut in the Bedford Grey wall color yet. It is a darn big room.

I’m feeling overwhelmed by things that need painting. Overwhelmed.

But, it will all get done. Eventually. But if you wanna come over with a paint brush and help me paint trim, I’d welcome you with open arms. And a bottle of wine.

Ryan took out the old tile around the fireplace. Now we have no idea what to do. We’ve gotta call our friends who own a fireplace store.

We also put the freshly-painted cabinet doors and new hardware back on the built-in unit in the living room.
I just bought some black hardware that fit the existing holes. I’m pleased.

Our master bedroom closet didn’t have flooring in half of it. So this week, instead of fussing with patching in the floor, Ryan put down some laminate flooring for the time being. It’s really not pretty unless you squint your eyes, but it does the job. And it’s a closet, so we’re going with it.

Extra! Extra!
OUR APPLIANCES WERE DELIVERED IN WEEK 47!
I’m really quite thrilled with them. We went with Kenmore fridge, stove and microhood and a Maytag dishwasher from Sears. The microhood, oven and dishwasher still need installed.
I chose black because I didn’t want white and I didn’t want stainless. Process of elimination. I found a few inspiration photos with light cabinets and black appliances on Pinterest, so I went for it. I’m happy I did. I’m really happy with the contrast.

I used black hardware and I’ll have a black faucet (I ordered this one by Kohler), so I like that the appliances pull it all together.

On that note, Ryan also installed all the cabinet hardware in the kitchen.

I chose cup pulls for the drawers and pull-outs and simple knobs for the doors. All from Home Depot. All in matte black. I love them.

This kitchen is making me happy.

And, that, my friends, was the week in review.

What do you think?

So happy with the black appliances! We have stainless in our condo and will NOT be having that when we buy a house!

The house is looking INSANELY good! That photo of your den where you could see the fireplace, the banister and the paneling going up the stairs made me swoon. And I love the hardware you chose for the kitchen! 🙂

Not more painting! I feel your pain with trim painting and I think you have like 10 times more than I ever did. I would come up and help if I could….just as soon as I am able to drink that wine! After you get all done you are going to have “no more painting” party. You are awesome at throwing parties and I bet you could come up with super cute ideas around that theme!

The kitchen really looks amazing! I’m so happy you went with black appliances, now I’ll feel cooler with my black appliances. The faucet you picket is similar to the one in my kitchen, only mine’s chrome. I really like the functionality of it, it works very well. The one you chose is more aesthetically pleasing than my inherited version. The black hardware is super-glam, I’m loving the way it’s all coming together!

Looks fabulous, seriously your house is amazing. I just want to wander through the halls and dreamup a house ike this in Texas. 🙂

Oh, we are getting an 8 year old Pug girl this weekend, she desperately needed a new home, so she is joining our pack. Any pug tips? We do have small dogs now, and large dogs… but she is supposedly great with both and kids. I would appreciate your Pug insight.

i laughed when i saw your first pinterest photo — that was our inspiration for how we’d redo the kitchen in a house we almost bought, and it came to mind when you said “white cabinets with dark appliances.” (except, i think i found it through yhl’s house crashing or reader redo or something like that.)

everything is looking great! it’s…a house. but the kind you can actually live in, now! =)

Amazing week! Totally with you on not wanting stainless – too much hassle to stay on top of fingerprints… Everything’s look fantastic!

Awesome as always! I love your banister- that flower is awesome (and a pain to paint I’m sure)! I don’t think we’ve seen it before. I have the same cabinets as you and it is so funny how different counters and knobs totally change the look.

My hubby & I do all the painting for our rental properties…so I can relate to all the work! It’s so rewarding once it’s all done.

I’m jealous of the farmhouse sink in the kitchen!!! I’ve been wanting one for a long time. They are super expensive though (I found a good price on one from IKEA, but it’s not the right size to fit our cabinets)

Things are looking so great at your place, Kim! I totally feel your pain about all the upcoming painting. If we lived near each other I would TOTALLY be on board for a wine/painting party. 🙂

I love that you chose black appliances and tied them in with the black pulls and fixtures. Your kitchen is looking awesome!
