Renovation progress report – week 39

May 5, 2011 by Kim Woodward

Our new yard is a heckuva lot larger than our current yard. There are also several huge trees with billions of leaves. (I counted.) So, yardwork is taking up much more time that we anticipated, just to keep up with things. We also want to get grass going now while we can and get the garden tilled up for summer produce and herbs.

Add the yard to a new class for me and the fact that Ryan’s been doing some traveling, there has been lots of silence on the house-front.

Let’s just say that one of the most exciting things going on was grass growing.

No seriously. This backyard was nothing but dirt and more dirt a month ago. Pretty much what the outside of the fence is sporting now.

So the fact that it has some green sprouts now is quite an accomplishment, right? Ryan seeded it once again this week in hopes that more grass will take.

I also did more raking than I ever want to do again. Although I will be, so it’s a fruitless dream.

Here’s the area that Ryan tilled up for the future garden. We chopped up a bunch of leaves into the dirt as well and will be putting a small fence around it to keep the pugs out. The area with the flags are the radishes that Ryan planted. That’s all that has been planted so far.

This week was also the week that we said goodbye to the clawfoot tub. If you remember, the bathroom didn’t fit the clawfoot with a shower so it had to go. Our friends Dave and Pam picked it up and will lovingly use it in their lovely old home.

(The before bath)
The tub has been on the upstairs landing for about 9 months, so it feels like we have a lot more space now. Although it did make a great garbage can. 😉

It was entertaining to watch the guys try to get that thing down the stairs. Let’s just say that it was solid.

(And no, I haven’t painted the trimwork in the stairway. Thanks for noticing.)

So, I’m afraid that’s all I got for you right now.

There are a few other things in-progress, though:

  • I began painting the front door but I’m photo-less and I think I’ll wait until I get another coat (or four) on it to share. We don’t like to leave the doors unlocked for obvious reasons, so it’s a job we can only really do on weekends.
  • Ryan’s about halfway done replacing wood boards in the house. This is a really frustrating job for him and he’ll be relieved when it’s done. He’s working on the kitchen right now, which needs the most repairs. When that’s finished, he has to fill all the holes in the wood floors from the cement board that was on top of it.
  • Jen and I are going to IKEA to order my cabinets in a few weeks (and to shop of course). I think my layout is confirmed.
So, that’s week 39. This baby is cookin’.

We are official grass growing failures so I am uber impressed with your sprouts. Are you guys going to do the full garden at the new place this year? Think of me while you are at IKEA…I will be with you in spirit!

We did an Ikea kitchen too. I love their online planning tools. Your tulips are so pretty and colorful.

Check out those colorful tulips that you didn’t even mention! It looks like spring in Illinois! The yard is looking FAB! I KNOW what it looked like before so can REALLY appreciate it. Keep up the good work sweetie, you make a mommy pr☺ud.

I’m actually ridiculously excited about your growing grass. It’s probably sympathetic excitement since I’m really excited about my growing grass. But, hey, grass is important!

Oh my! That was some “before” bath! You guys have done amazing work in there.

A nice patch off grass is totes something to be proud of. We have these two giant trees in our front yard that drop a bajillion tiny things all spring and summer, all over everything we mulch. So it looks nice for 2 hours then boom, it goes back to looking like a mess. Meh.

Dude, I might be slow but I didn’t realize that Jen was in your neck of the woods! Can we make her come hang out when we visit??? But she can’t wear her bikini because that will be depressing. Ha.

Hey, nothin’ wrong with watching grass grow!! I know how exciting it is to finally see green (even though we did sod, not seed). Your fence also looks great, and such pretty tulips, too!

i couldn’t imagine trying to move a claw-foot tub! i had one in my house growing up (it was a 1920’s cottage in CT), and we actually had to restructure the house to support it. them things are HEAVY!

Wow I can’t believe your grass is growing we have had an awful drought here in TX everything is dead or dying :+(

Three cheers for growing grass! Our backyard is a largely grass-less mud pit. Which is awesomesauce with two dogs. We chopped down our ginormous tree so we could build our garage, though, so fortunately we don’t have as much raking to do. We do have half of our neighbor’s tree in our yard though, so there’s that.

I just have to say your tulips are just beautiful. I can’t wait to see progress on your garden. We have been working like crazy in our backyard and I am hoping I will have time to get a garden in.

Impressive work! I can’t believe how much you two accomplish each week. I’m so looking forward to reading all about your future Ikea kitchen. I love their cabinets and always spend way too much time in that section.
