Porch roofing and exterior lighting ideas

October 5, 2015 by Kim Woodward

My favorite part of the new house is every single thing in the new house.

If I’m talking about the kitchen, I’ll tell you it’s my favorite part. If I’m showing you our new bedroom, I’ll muse over the view and the ceilings and how it’s my favorite part. If we’re discussing the mudroom, I’ll rave over how having a mudroom has to be my favorite part.

So take this next statement with a Kim-size grain of salt: The outside is my favorite part.

Ryan, my brother and our dads worked this weekend to finish shingling the front and back roofs. The real goal is to get it all weather tight before the snow falls.

And it’s close.

But I don’t want to talk about that. Because this outside work has me hearing voices about exterior lighting. Yes, exterior lighting is totally a thing.

Because Pinterest whispers to me: “You need the most stunning outdoor lighting.”houzz exterior lighting

“Your soffits deserve to be fully lit at night,” Pinterest croons.

“In fact,” Pinterest tells me. “Your house should actually GLOW.”

And if there’s one thing I know about life, it’s that you should always listen to Pinterest.

So I’m dreaming of can lighting in the front garage soffits. Wouldn’t that be perfect? (You can also go ahead and imagine all the beautiful landscaping below. I am.)

And then I’ll need some sort of light fixture (or fixtures plural?) on the peak at the front.

What’s that? You want a poorly-made mockup? I aim to please.

Moving on to other things Pinterest has been telling me.

Lights above the garage door.

But I’m not sure where the lights should go. Here’s a quick peak at the garage side with siding.

And a nearly professional mockup with lights right above.

Or maybe high above to match the front.

Basically, as Ryan and the dream team are spending days working their hearts out on this house, I’m letting Pinterest manipulate me.

Typical.

Hello, Very nice. May I please ask if the white strip under the gable shingle look siding is just lap siding or is it a special piece to separate the shingles from the lab siding? I like the look but can’t figure out how to make that break other than to just paint the last row. Enjoy your home It is lovely.

We actually installed a trim piece (same style as the window trim, but a bit wider) under the gables to break up the two spots.

      Hope this helps!

Are the windows above the porch bedroom windows? If so, you might want to omit the lights on the peak up there because it might be annoying to have the lights shining down into bedrooms. Just a thought.

That is a good point. I thought about that a little, but we won’t have the lights on all the time so I wasn’t super concerned. But thanks for bringing it up – definitely something to consider.

Your house is looking ahhhhhmazing! We went a little overboard with exterior lighting and I worry that we look a little obnoxious when all the lights are turned on. I have barn lights by the front, back, patio and garage doors, 4 pot lots in the soffits of our bigger gable, and 2 in our smaller gable. We do not “glow”, we light up the neighbourhood! Your inspiration pics have inspired me to find lower wattage soft lights for the soffits – I want to “glow” too!

All the lights! It’s going to be sooo lovely – I’m jealous of all the possibilities! I prefer the lights over the garage door hung on the darker, lower portion. I totally see a face with an open mouth in the picture where they’re “hung” higher up! 😀

I love a glowing house for sure and I agree that you should listen to Pinterest
