A pond for all seasons

March 27, 2014 by Kim Woodward

When we decided to build a pond at the property Ryan told me that it would likely take three or four years to fill up. He was trying to curb my enthusiasm because I was already talking about buying paddle boats. And it’s nearly full after one (horrible) winter.

Oh, yeah. Did I tell you that we dug out a pond at the property? Ha. Yeah. I forgot to tell you that. Let’s put this car in reverse.

Digging out a pond1

File this under “stuff I forgot to tell you” or “stuff I didn’t think was interesting enough” or “I mostly just got busy.” We didn’t do this ourselves, so it just didn’t really make the blog, I guess. The backstory is that Ryan has always talked about having a pond but it was something we planned to do down the road. But when his friends/coworkers bought some equipment to start a pond-making business, Ryan offered to be the guinea pigs. So, we paid them for their time and in October, they dug out the pond and installed the drainage and whatever else one needs for a 1/2 acre pond. It’s seriously really big. I don’t have any ideas about the details, so that’s why I’m not sharing them.Digging out a pond2

This is the view from the pond to the barn (in October). It’s totally walkable.Digging out a pond3

When we were out at the property last week, we realized that the pond was nearly full. So we need to get planting some pond plants along the banks and we may even be able to add a first wave of small fish this summer. All that snow is good for something. Consider this the bright side.Pond property March 20141

Now, where’s my dang paddleboat?

Yay, a pond! It makes me miss our first house in the country. We had a lovely river on our property and the neighbours had a pond that was right next to us. I love that you will stock your pond with fish. I’m sure it will be lots of fun for Henry as well. 🙂

I’m sure Henry will love it! Lots of memories to be made!

If your property wasn’t cool enough already, you go and add a pond to it?! I’m insanely jealous. But that’s just one more reason to come visit you. I can even bring my own paddle boat (though the kayak would probably be more practical to transport…)

I really would love you to visit. That would be such an amazing treat for me.

Wow a pond! That will be so cool in the summer. Both in the literal and the totally awesome sense! Yay for all that snow to fill it up!

I’m am so so so so jealous. I’ve ALWAYS wanted a pond on property. This is the coolest. I love paddle boats and all things pond related. I’m so excited it’s almost full! Look at you guys, being the raddest people on the planet.

I have an idea – you come and visit the house/pond/barn. And then I use your awesome vintage trailer for the weekend? Deal?

I cannot EVEN with your barn property anymore. Will you adopt me so I can grow up with a pond for swimming and skating and all that land to explore and the super awesome barn loft apartment for my friends to hang out in? Ok good, I’m buying a plane ticket.

Talking paddleboats!!! You kill me! Your property is so gorgeous. I guess having such a harsh winter has paid off!!

Ryan thinks I”m ridiculous, but I say that paddle boats are the only real reason to have a pond on one’s property.

build your own pond! Fun. We have a creek in our back yard and a pond across the woods but we can’t see if from the house darn it!

You still know it’s there! That’s what matters!

I can’t believe you never mentioned the pond?! what other exciting secrets are you keeping? 😉 Paddleboats definitely. half an acre is huge–our whole lot is half an acre, and I don’t think I’d make it across in a paddleboat. Well, I guess I could. If it wasn’t too windy.

I also won the lottery, moved to Aruba and had plastic surgery. I now answer to Janita instead of Kim.

Okay. Fine. It’s just the pond.

Fantastic! What a great place for Henry to learn about nature studies. I bet he and Ryan will be fishing too. One of our goals for our future property is to have a stocked pond, so that we are less reliant on food shopping. Thanks for sharing this very interesting post! I’d love to have you share it on The Maple Hill Hop!

Henry loooooves the outdoors so we can hardly wait to be out at the property. We’re hoping to stock it with fish in the next few years – just like everything, it’s a process.
