Our full exterior palette and a new red door

October 26, 2015 by Kim Woodward

Thanks to Behr for sponsoring this post.

It’s almost the season that comes after the beauty and splendor of fall.

This season in like Voldemort in Harry Potter. Don’t say the name out loud for fear of death eaters. Or snow.

But death eaters aside, our house-building goal was really to have the exterior completed before winter. And we’re getting closer and closer.

Barn red door NewlyWoodwards4

A small part of this goal included installing lock sets on the exterior doors.

And since I knew I’d be painting the front door eventually, I figured it would make more sense to do it before installing the locks.

I was waffling between a red door and a mint green/aqua door (the same color I painted Henry’s playhouse).

In the end, I went with red. It ties better into the barn. It is a nice pop of color on the front. We have a lot of red accents already, so it would be nice to tie it in. And it just felt right – we painted our last two front doors red and it’s the color of welcome.

And now, the door looks so ridiculously good with the black and red and slate gray, I could cry.  (Check out our planned exterior color palette. for more details.)

And that transom over the front door is just dreamy.

We ended up using Behr Antique Red (satin finish) for the front door.

We actually used the same color on our doors inside the barn. It looks a lot different outside – brighter. I would say it’s deeper when we used it inside.

But it’s a great red and pops against the other colors we chose for the exterior (Magnet for siding, Ultra Pure White for trim, Pumice for top shakers). It looks great when it’s cloudy or when it’s sunny.

I also like that the color corresponds with the barn. (Which we finished with a red stain.)

The barn and house are really right next door to each other, so I’m happy that they live peacefully together. Like siblings that like each other but have their own style.

And the lockset I chose is really killer. I love that it has a traditional look and I love that I could buy locks that all used the same key. (Hurray for modern conveniences!)

Painting the front door of the house was a really simple and fast way to make it feel more like a home.

Next up:

We’ve turned a lot of our attention indoors, but there are a few more outdoor projects we’re hoping to complete before the snow flies – installing the garage door (should be in next week), finishing exterior caulking, and installing and painting the front and back deck boards.

What’s your favorite front door color?

Thanks! I was still unsure about the top peak color until I painted the red door. Now I think it’s a keeper. And god knows I wasn’t going to be getting on a three story ladder to repaint.

The red front door looks so pretty paired with your grey house, the outside is looking so good!! I think as long as you love the front door color you can’t get it wrong, I will say I’m not always a fan of basic white doors….way to vanilla lol!

I love me some mint/aqua but I definitely think you made the right decision by going with red. It certainly is welcoming, looks great against the exterior siding and I love your comment about the house and barn being like siblings with their own style, lol. Now I want to find something to paint this color!

Thanks, Katie! I think it was a perfect choice for the door, too.

We are basically planning on stealing your whole outdoor palette for when we get around to updating our exterior. It feels fresh and modern, but there is something classic about – I just can’t picture the combination ever going out of style! Love it all!!!!

Love it! I can’t believe how quickly the house is coming together! (Although maybe it doesn’t feel nearly as fast to the ones doing the work.) It is looking so beautiful, and i love that red door. Perfect choice to tie in with the barn.

Gotta be honest, that black trim sealed the deal. So fabulous + congrats on crossing yet another chic project off the list!

RIGHT? I’m obsessed with the black. It was such a huge investment and I lost some sleep over the black windows (because I’m insane). But it’s all coming together just like my mind told me it would.

Ooo, I love this shade! It almost brings a modern feel to the farmhouse. Kind of a balance, bringing something new to the game. It plays so well with the hardware and the other colors you chose! Love following this project.
