Organizing electronics in a small space (a basket hack)

January 22, 2015 by Kim Woodward

This seems almost too silly to post.

But I’m never above silliness.

Cords and electronic devices have always been a problem for me. They are always tangled and piled up. And even though we got rid of a few of the devices when we moved to the barn, I still had a cabinet packed and piled with electronics.

It wasn’t a great solution, but it was hidden away in a small cabinet so I just ignored it.

But a few days ago, I emptied a basket in another project and I had an idea.

Electronics storage with a basket1I turned the basket on its side in the cabinet, which gave some added height and stability for the DVD player, direct TV box and router/back up drive.

On each side of the basket, I was able to squeeze another device (the Wii on the left and the satellite Internet receiver on the right).

Inside the basket, I was able to store two plastic shoeboxes.

  • One box holds all the extra cords and headphones.
  • The bottom box holds USBs, discs and our small scanner.

I’m pretty excited about this little solution. Before, not only way the cabinet a disaster, I was also worried that all the electronics would fall over each other and break.

But no more.

Baskets will save the world. Mark my world.

A basket hack indeed! Cords and electronic devices are such a pain, but oh so necessary. Glad you found a good solution!

How nifty! I scored some very sturdy pretty shoe box size baskets with lids at the thrift store for $4.99 each (I waffled over spending that much and finally bought them) ((and later found the exact same baskets at Reproduction Hardware for $24.99 each!!!)). I put a surge strip in one with the cord out the ‘handle’ opening. Then I plugged in all my ‘stuff’, coiled up the extra cords with twist ties and ran those cords out the handle opening in the lid. Looks just nice sitting behind the end table… I grin whenever I look at it! 🙂 This is for things we don’t unplug often though…

This is an awesome idea! A charging station is something that’s been on my list, too.
