Never enough plants: A spring home tour

March 6, 2017 by Kim Woodward

I’m not Irish, and I really don’t do much in the way of specific St. Patrick’s Day decor.

But in our home decor, I still celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and the start of spring with more than green beer or shamrocks – I usher it in with peeks of green and tons of plants.

Nothing says springs like plants.green kitchen tour NewlyWoodwards07

I’m excited to be part of a fun blog hop tour with loads of incredible bloggers led by Meg at Green with Decor. It’s called Home with Decor: St. Patrick’s Day home tour, and it’s all about the green.

Make sure to check out all the great green-themed home tours today – all of the participating bloggers are linked at the bottom of this post and have loads of wonderful spring inspiration!

I’m excited to share the way I integrate green into our home for spring. Once the Valentine’s Day decor came down, it was time for a change. But in our house, that change came mostly in the way of plants – both real and faux.

Because I’m not a plant purist – I think you can have both.

I love that I have the opportunity to swap out the decor on our open shelves throughout the year. It gives me an opportunity to clean everything well – and it keeps me from getting bored. green kitchen tour NewlyWoodwards02

And I was surprised by how many green items I already had. green kitchen tour NewlyWoodwards03

And don’t forget a few peeks of yellow for good measure. (This frame is a great way to change art for the seasons – I print a free printable for each holiday and just swap it out.)

I’ve actually been nurturing a lot of live plants in addition to my fake ones this year – it was one of my goals for 2017 to keep indoor plants alive.

So far – success!

So if you are also a black thumb, take heart. It can be done. I chose a mix of simple-to-care-for house plants and succulents. I check them each week for watering and then give them plenty of sunlight and chatter. (Seriously – they must really love my chatter.)

And everything is still alive, so I’m calling this a win. (This succulent bowl was a recent addition and I’m obsessed.)

There are so many notable reasons to bring houseplants into your home. Not only are they pretty and give lots of texture and life to your space, but they also improve the air quality inside your home.

I’ve been bringing a new plant into the house almost every month – trying to focus on the plants that have the most positive impact on air quality. (Including this lovely peace lily. This one has a few brown spots, but seems happy overall. Any tips for care are welcome.)

I also find that caring for plants is a good practice for my mental health – I don’t know why, but they really do help me feel at peace.green plants for spring NewlyWoodwards1

In addition to becoming a bit of a plant lady, I created this simple hoop art for craft night this month (using this tutorial) and it’s pretty hanging on the basement door.

This could easily last all summer – but feels great for spring. Am I the only person out there obsessed with tulips? Mine are already coming up in the yard and I can’t wait to see those pretty blooms!hoop wreath with tulips1

Finally, I added a final touch to our front door – this simple bucket filled with faux succulents. green plants for spring NewlyWoodwards2

They happen to resemble shamrocks, which means it’s perfect for St. Patrick’s Day. It’s the perfect welcome to our green-filled home. (But always with a bit of red, for good measure.)green plants for spring NewlyWoodwards3

I’m in agreement that one can never have too many plants! We have two peace lillies that we keep inside during the colder months, and then place outside on a shady part of the porch. They don’t like direct sun.
You’re doing a great job with all of your lovelies!

I may need to move my peace lily -it’s not a south facing window, but it’s so sunny everywhere around us that maybe it’s a bit much. I’m hoping to move it outside on the covered porch when it gets nicer.

I love that succulent bowl. Do you do a tutorial for it somewhere? I would love to make one, but don’t know where to start or get materials.

I actually made it at a local class – but I think I should make another and share the steps. It’s stupid easy but turned out great!

I wish I could grow plants – I just don’t have enough sun exposure for them to thrive in my home. Still, I keep trying. My husband pretty much sings taps when I bring a new green friend through the door, though! I love all of your green touches. The wall pocket on your front door – first, red, my favorite – is adorable. Perfect!

Thanks so much, Kim! Our last house had so much shade that I always struggled with plants – so I can feel your pain!

Very pretty, Its true what you said about plants being great for mental health. I totally agree, it makes me happy being outside with my plants and garden.

It seems that the Vitamin D never hurts outside, either. Thanks so much!
