Mums the word

September 15, 2009 by Kim Woodward

I love mums. And this year – for the first time – my mums came back up.

I planted them in 2007 and they didn’t come back in 2008. But, they are back with a vengeance this year. They got GINORMOUS.
It’s looking a little crazy in our side yard. I planted the bulbs and they are going like crazy, too. I’m not winning any gardening awards because everything is really squishing each other. But, I really love seeing the mums anyhow.
There are two of the yellow-white mums. And, then two of these reddish-mums that haven’t bloomed yet. (Those are calla lilies next to them. Cannot wait to see those bloom.)
Here’s the side yard right after mulching it in early 2008.
Here it is at the spring of 2009.
And now.

Whoa!
I like the colors, but I will definitely be re-evaluating next year. I’ll be planting the red flowers (bulbs) and the callas (bulbs) elsewhere and the corn will disappear. I’m also going to break up the irises and possibly move a few other things.
You live and learn, I guess.
How are your flowers doing?

I love the corn! I think it adds some height and visual interest. You have done such an amazing job on your house in such a short amount of time!

I think the flowers look great. While they may be a bit crowded, I think it looks amazing, nice and filled in a full.
We’ve planned a number of plants in a plnater on our side yard the last two years and I can’t wait to see them grown and fill in.

So jealous that you live in a warm enough zone for things to come back up! Minnesota is not so kind to the flowers

Wow! You are so inspiring!! I didn’t know mums came back! I have a lot to learn about gardening. 🙂 I actually really like the corn. It adds nice height to the bed and is so fall-ish in an unexpectedly beautiful way.
