Love grows best in little houses (and free Silhouette cut file)

February 8, 2016 by Kim Woodward

I’m going to come clean … I’m tired of living in a tiny space.

Sigh.

I can talk about all the virtues of living small. I can talk about the great things that have come from getting rid of the stuff. And it’s all true and right and good.

But the truth is, I’m ready to have more space. I’m ready to have the space to entertain and a bedroom where I can close the door and a dishwasher. Gosh. I want a dishwasher so badly.

But there’s still a lot of work before we can move into the house. So I have been trying to check my attitude at the door and think positive. And this little sign is a good reminder.

This was another quick project with a pre-made board. (I’ve seen similar versions at all the craft stores and at the Target Dollar Spot.)

I started with a quick coat of paint – using two colors to create the striped effect. Then, I added a design I created in vinyl (alternating white and silver vinyl). It was a quick and simple project, and a good reminder for days I’ve forgetting about the virtues of small space living.

If you want to make your own sign, I’m sharing the design as a free download. Just open in Silhouette Design Studio and cut on the vinyl of your choice. This would also make an adorable Valentine’s Day card or even a shirt (just make sure to flip the design if you are using heat transfer).

Here are the supplies I used for this project:

  • Unfinished pallet sign (via craft stores)
  • Paint of your choice
  • Silhouette Portrait
  • Silhouette blade
  • Silver glossy vinyl
  • White glossy vinyl
  • Silhouette transfer paper

I missed this post! You should get a friggin award for being an excellent small home dweller. You really did it so well. And now you’ve done your time and it’s time to move on. Nothing wrong with that!

I will totally be doing this project. I’ve been telling my husband I wanted this quote hanging out our little cottage house…because that’s what we live in. I’m sure I’ll get sick of it one day, because to be honest the months leading up to us moving in I would talk about how much I didn’t want to move into this house because it was so small. And now it’s grown on me…well, as much as a little house can grow…But It’s home and I like it. I by no means will live here forever but for now it will do.

I love your honesty, it is so refreshing ! I would bet it’s even harder to live small when your forever home is just right there where you can see it all the time, getting so close to being done and looks gorgeous. We have been living small, not as small as you though, since 2013 trying to decide on the next house. I catered 4 Super Bowl parties and made snacks for my nurse daughter to share this weekend and I have 12 inches of counter to work with….thank goodness for folding tables! We are in North Carolina now so the Super Bowl was a big party day yesterday. Not victorious, but its the food and the commercials that matter! Going to have to up our efforts to find the next fixer…

How much longer do you think it will be until your house is considered “liveable”?

We hope to be in before May. The plaster should be done by March and then floors and trim and kitchens and bathroom finishing. I think it’s going to speed up considerably after the plaster. 😉
